As half term approaches we look back at the learning and skills we have developed over the last 6 weeks.
(Questions written for parents/carers to ask their children)
Foundation
Ball skills – Pupils explored how we move with a ball. Pupils discovered what body part and equipment we can use to “dribble” a ball. We focused on using both hands and both feet when dribbling with our body and we learnt how to hold a hockey stick safely.
Q – What is dribbling? A – Moving with a ball.
Gymnastics – Pupils learnt how and what is a “balance”. Pupils explored making a variety of shapes with their body and used their imagination to create a wide selection of balances. We also looked how we can travel instead of walking and linked this with our balances to make a short sequence.
Q – what is a balance? A- Body is still in a shape for 3 seconds.
KS1
Ball skills – We explored what sports we need to dribble a ball in and these sports are called “invasion Sports”. Pupils learnt how to dribble in sports such as football, hockey and basketball and we discovered the similarities when dribbling in any sport, such as keeping the ball close to keep control and the need to dribble with our head up to avoid being tackled.
Q – When dribbling do we take big or small touches? A – Small touches to keep the ball close.
Gymnastics – Pupils focused on such gymnastic skills as balancing, travelling and rolls and we linked these actions together to create a “sequence”. Pupils also worked on their teamwork and communication skills by teaching each other their sequences and trying to mirror each other.
Q – When we link different actions together this is called? A – Sequence
Year 3
Gymnastics – In this topic we explored how we land safely and the shape “motor bike landing”. Pupils then developed shapes as they jump, learning gymnastic jumps such as pencil, tuck, start, half turn, full turn, plus more. We then linked these skills with balances & travelling actions to make a short sequence and then finally added rolls progressing onto forwards rolls and adding this into the sequence. Pupils also discussed the importance of different levels in our sequences and using “extension” in our body when performing in gymnastics.
Q – What does the motor bike shape look like and why? A – squat shape (soft knees), hands out (balance), head up (to keep still).
Skip to the beat – We used skipping as a tool to improve our co-ordination. Pupils explored different ways to skip on their own and as skipping in a group. We also looked at different foot patterns when skipping e.g. 2>2, 1>other, 1>same. We also used this topic as an opportunity to work on observing and commenting on others’ performance to improve.
Q – Why is timing so important? A – knowing when to jump to avoid the rope and getting into a pattern/rhythm.
Year 4
Throwing & Catching skills (Dodgeball) -We used dodgeball as a vehicle to improve our throwing & catching skills. Pupils progressed onto throwing with power and accuracy and when tracking a ball to catch, to get our body in line and behind the ball instead of reaching. There were also opportunities to effectively work as a team and organise positions and strategies to overcome an opponent.
Q – What are the stages of tracking a ball? A – look > move in Line > body behind > hands ready
Cool Core – Pupils discovered the benefits of Pilates. We learnt about the importance of our core and how a strong core leads to a strong body. All children practiced a variety on Pilates shapes and linked them to make a sequence, working on flow and control throughout.
Q – Can you name and demonstrate some of the Pilates shapes? A – Pencil, giraffe, mountain, rock, mountain ledge, mountain top.
Year 5
Striking & Fielding – Pupils investigated how to direct the ball when striking it. We learnt how to changing our body shape or the angle of bat can effect the direction of the ball. In fielding we focussed on how to stop the ball with a long barrier and how to collect and return a ball on the move. We then progressed onto implement different skills in a game situations.
Q – How can I change the direction of the ball? A – Change body position or angle of the bat.
Boxercise – In Boxercise the children devised their own circuits and learnt about a new and exciting way to exercise. Pupils combined boxing manoeuvres like jab, hook, uppercut and combination with a variety of exercises to create boxercise routines. We focused on on how different ways of exercising can help with leading a healthy active lifestyle. Pupils also discussed why warming up and stretching is essential and all children created their own warm ups.
Q – Why do we warm up? A – Prepare body / prevent injury. Focus mind.
Year 6
Striking & Fielding – Pupils investigated how to direct the ball when striking it. We learnt how to changing our body shape or the angle of bat can effect the direction of the ball. In fielding we focussed on how to stop the ball with a long barrier and how to collect and return a ball on the move. Pupils also developed their bowling skills and learnt how to bowl correctly in cricket. We then progressed onto implement different skills in a game situations.
Q – What technique can we use to bowl correctly? A – Figure of 6
Cool Core – Pupils discovered the benefits of Pilates. We learnt about the importance of our core and how a strong core leads to a strong body. As well at Pilates pupils worked on core exercises and devised a routine of Pilates shapes and core exercises and linked them to make a sequence, working on flow and control throughout.
Q – Can you name and demonstrate some of the Pilates shapes? A – Pencil, giraffe, mountain, rock, mountain ledge, mountain top.
