Reading and Writing
We have launched into our brand new Talk for Writing book, ‘The Great Kapok Tree’ by Lynne Cherry. The Great Kapok Tree is an enchanting story filled with delightful illustrations that depict the effects of deforestation. The children have enjoyed learning the model text off by heart by adding lots of actions. We have had a big push on building vocabulary through the use of thesauruses and synonyms.
Maths
Following on from last year’s maths unit, we have been using our knowledge of times tables and division facts to answer more complex questions. For example, we have been looking at dividing a 2 digit number by a 1 digit number. Have a look at the calculation below. Why not ask your child what strategies they can use to solve it.
Science
To kickstart our brand new science topic of ‘Animals Including Humans’, we went on an exciting hunt around our school grounds to locate the five different food groups. They worked in groups to decipher clues and had a hands on experience of each food type. Following on from this, we have discussed what a balanced diet is and what it should include. Why not try designing your own balanced meals for the week using the image below.
Topic – The Stone Age!
WOW! What a brilliant start we have had to our Stone Age topic. ‘Adventure Into’ provided the children with the most fun-filled and exciting day to introduce them to life in the Neolithic era. The children learned the following skills:
- How to create their own fire.
- How to hunt animals
- How to gather for their tribe
- How to fire a bow and arrow
- How to make and use different tools

Thank you to all of our parents and carers who contributed towards this day. The children really did have a fantastic day!
