It has been a great start to the new school year. The children have settled well into their new classes and have gotten used to having a new class name.

English

In English we studied the book ‘Meerkat Mail’ which is about a meerkat who is looking for the perfect place to live. He visited lots of hot countries so we wrote about him visiting a cold place. The children wrote postcards home to the family about where he lived and we created a comic strip about his journey.

Maths

We have been working on number and place value using a range of concrete apparatus such as tens frames, dienes, rekenrek and cubes. The children are now working on adding and subtracting two two-digit numbers crossing a 10.

History

The children really enjoyed our history topic on important monarchs in British history. They found out why William was called William the Conqueror, what gave Bad King John his reputation and why Queen Elizabeth was adored by the British public.

RE

This half term, the children have been learning about how people in different cultures and religions celebrate special events. We have studied the importance of a Hindu wedding, the Dastar Bandi celebration for Sikhs and Hanukah for Jewish people.

Art

The children had a great time in our art lessons! We looked at the art created by the Danish artist Piet Mondrian and produced our own work using the three primary colours. We then moved onto creating light and dark shades of the primary colours and mixing these together to make secondary colours for our Kandinsky-inspired art.

This half term we will be reading:

Thank you for supporting your children at home with their reading and spellings. Look out for information on our Christmas carol concert and our trip to the zoo in January.
