Reading

In Reading, we have explored the books ‘Pax’ and ‘The Amazing Night Sky Atlas’. The children have been really exploring the non-fiction text that links closely to our Science unit. They have illustrated images, learnt new vocabulary as well as exploring the differences between non fiction books

English

In English, we started the year with abstract poetry. We wrote our own version of the poem  ‘The River’ by Pie Corbett. We then moved on to creating the opening and build-up of a suspense story and writing a letter to advise. The children have really enjoyed taking part in debates and setting up a mock court trial as well as debating if children should be allowed to use their phones at break and lunch time.

Maths

In Maths, we started the year with place value. The children learnt how to manipulate base ten numbers using concrete, pictorial and abstract representations.  We then moved onto addition and subtraction, then multiplication and division where we got to expand our understanding of different methods to help us calculate problems. In mastering numbers we have been learning about multiplication and division facts. We have been learning about fact families, factors and multiples.

Science

We started the year with a unit on Space. The children have loved learning about the solar system and have participated in practical activities such as going outdoors to represent the planets in orbit. We have also looked at the phases of the moon and used playdough to represent the different phases. Next term we’ll move on to a new unit on forces where the children will use physical resources and objects to represent the different forces.

Music

In music, we have been learning the pocket trumpet. It has been amazing to watch the children progress from using just the mouthpiece to making a sound with the trumpet and learning to read music and play notes on the stave. Children are beginning to develop a keen sense of pulse and their rhythmic fluency.

Value of the term – resilience

Our value of the term is resilience. We have been learning about Anna Nzinga Mbande. She was a warrior queen who founded a new kingdom called Matamba (modern day Angola) and kept fighting for her people and their right to be free.

Coming up next:

  • In English we are continuing with our unit on discussion texts and will then move onto playscripts.
  • In maths we are going to continue our unit on fractions until Christmas. Then we will move onto multiplication and division after Christmas.
  • In history we are going to start our unit on Vikings.
  • In French we are continuing our work on naming and understanding different animals.
  • In PSHE we are continuing our unit on celebrating differences.

In Year 1 we’re off to a flying start! Our Year 1’s have started school with a positive attitude and exemplary resilience. They have shown their teachers that they are ready to learn and try their best.  Here are a few of the excellent things we have been learning in Year 1.

Maths

The children in Year 1 have been learning about Addition. They have been using the part-whole model to partition numbers. The children have been using the stem sentences to show their understanding and confidently add two numbers together to identify the whole number. They have been using cubes and counters to help them solve these Mathematical problems. Then the children learnt about number bonds to 10. They identified two numbers that can be added to make any number within 10 or to 10. The children used counters and ten frames to help them understand these Mathematical concepts.

English

If your child has come home talking about pirates then this will be because of our English unit. The children have been learning about poems. They have learnt about nouns, adjectives and rhyming words. Using these skills, they created fantastic poems! The teachers in Year 1 are proud of how hard they have working and of their creativity.

Reading

In Year 1 the children have been diving into the book ‘Winter Sleep’. They have learnt new vocabulary that is key to the text and explored the season Winter. This book was about hibernation. The children learnt that a bat, dormouse and bear hibernates during Winter, it was lovely to see the engagement and enthusiasm that this created in our classrooms.

Science

Our children in Year 1 have shown themselves to be excellent scientists! They have loved investigating and exploring different objects and materials. The children have carried out an amazing investigation where they decided which material would work best to keep the teddy bear dry. They found out that plastic is the most suitable material because it is waterproof and not absorbent.

Jigsaw

In Year 1 the children have taken in their stride, the value of the month…Resilience! The children have completed a range of activities. They created goals they would like to achieve in 2024 and celebrated diversity in our classrooms. This is some of the amazing work our children have created…

Topic

In Geography, the children have explored about their local area…WIGMORE! They have been learning about a variety of local landmarks and are now familiar with the local area and what makes it special. Whilst exploring our local area, the children identified the different types of homes and jobs.

Art

In Year 1 we are Amazing Artists! The children have learnt about the primary colours, blue, yellow and red. They explored the famous artist Andy Warhol and his style of work: Pop art. The children used this style and created vibrant, eye-catching artwork. Have a look at some of these great examples

The teacher’s in Year 1 will look forward to all the new adventures we are going to have in Autumn 2.

This term our theme for RE is God and Faith. The children have learnt about places of worship such as mosques, churches and synagogues. They have been introduced to different religious symbols and have connected them to the correct religious group.

Continuous provision:
The children have been busy bees accessing the continuous provision areas. They have been developing their creative skills by working on their scissor and brush control. Recently, the children have been learning about Mae Jemison and bursting with imaginative ideas as they became designers in the junk modelling area, creating rockets. Our mathematicians have continued comparing, sorting and matching learning in Maths. The term’s topic ‘Ourselves’ was explored thoroughly using a selection of natural resources. The children were engaged and enjoyed creating photos of their families and friends.

Outdoor learning:
What a great start to this year’s outdoor weeks! The weather has not been as kind to us this year, but the children have still enjoyed some outdoor learning. They have been busy in the Mud Kitchen (Wiggy Cafe) cooking a variety of recipes, like mud cakes and Mud hot chocolate. The children have also enjoyed building a three-story car park using a selection of wooden blocks. Next term, they will continue working on their gross motor skills and building their friendship circle.

Understanding the world:
We have had fun looking for the signs of Autumn in our outside provision. We have spotted the leaves which are changing colour and have noticed that it is getting darker earlier. The weather is getting colder too as well as wet! We have been on an Autumn walk and have taken some pictures of what we observed.

Maths:
The children started this term by learning to match objects that are the same, such as pairs of socks or gloves. They have also been grouping different objects into two groups according to their colour, shape, and size.

We have moved on to measurement and have been learning the vocabulary of big and small, heavy and light, tall and short. We have also discussed more and fewer. Our next topic is learning to count and recognise numbers up to 3.
