17th June 2022Simon Marshall

We look back at the learning and skills we have developed last half term

(Questions written for parents/carers to ask their children)

KS1

Cool Core – Pupils developed their understanding of the importance of our core and how it is key for movement, agility and balance. We learnt how we could strengthen our core muscles in a variety of ways using lots of different equipment and games.

Q- Where is your core?

Athletics – Skills worked on in this topic included, knowing how to travel in different ways, being able to change from fast to slow, deciding which throwing method is best for distance and exploring which is the best way to jump to cover a distance. Pupils used the skills learnt into mini Olympic style competition within their house teams.

Q – What techniques can we use to run faster? A- Look straight, face to waist with our arms, knees up for longer strides.

Year 3

OAA – Our main focus was on team work and what skills are needed for a team to be successful. Pupils were set a variety of problem solving task and pupils had to work as a team to complete. Pupils discussed the importance of communication, leadership, and co operation. Pupils also started on orienteering and the features of a map and what helps us to understand a map e.g. key and landmarks.

Q – What is one of the most important skills for teamwork?

Striking & fielding skills – Pupils worked on knowing techniques for accurate overarm and underarm throwing. Catching with cushioned hands. Retrieving the ball effectively. Using fielding skills to stop the batter scoring. Using skills learned in a game situation. Being able to hit the ball in a variety of directions.

Q – How can we add distance to our throws?

Year 4

Athletics – Pupils analysed running techniques and looked at strengths and weaknesses and how to improve different aspects of running. Other areas of athletics covered were, jumping and how we can jump further using a variety of foot patterns. Then we progressed onto linking foot patterns to create the triple jump. In throwing activities we discussed how to use our whole body to throw for distance not just our arms.

Q. Can you name some of the tips for technique when sprinting?
