Proud of what is happening in and around the school for the children

16th June 2023Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope everyone is taking the opportunity to enjoy the fantastic weather that has been on offer over the last few weeks. The children in school have been reminded about the importance of staying hydrated, wearing a hat and applying sunscreen to keep them safe and sun smart!

Last Tuesday evening the governing body met and welcomed two new governors following the parent election that took place. Mr Aashish Khadia, who was successful in the election, will be a valuable addition to the governing body and the school will no doubt benefit from his experience and ability to ask pertinent and challenging questions linked to strategies designed to improve Wigmore. Mr Omer also joined the governing body as the nominated staff governor. Mr Omer knows the school very well and will be able to support the school in answering a range of questions about the strategic direction of Wigmore.

Year 3 and 4 have been out on different trips linked to their learning in different areas of the curriculum. Year 5 were also involved in a concert performed by folk band The Young Uns who performed their song they wrote about Wigmore. On Wednesday afternoon a group of pupils also visited the local library and some of our Key Stage 2 pupils took part in the Zone Athletics at Queen Elizabeth School on Thursday afternoon.

It has also been busy in the classrooms as well! Year 1 have been completing the phonics screening assessment and Year 4 have also recently completed the Multiplication Tables Check. Some pupils from Warden Hill Junior School have also been visiting Wigmore today as part of our involvement in the Linking Network project.

This week senior leaders have also been looking closely at children’s books in English and Maths. It has been pleasing to see the progress that some children are making in their learning.

Yesterday I sent a letter to parents and carers about your voice to be included in our new school prospectus. It would be great if you could take a quick minute to email something to school and we can use some of your positive comments in this important document. Thank you to those parents and carers who have already sent their thoughts to school via email.

Unfortunately this week I have been informed by some of the children that they have heard adults swearing in the presence of children at school pick up time. Please be mindful that children should not be in a position in our school where they are hearing adults swear.

ATTEND TO ACHIEVE!

At Wigmore we have to aim to be here every day! Excellent attendance is 97% or above. There are strong links between good attendance and good progress in school, both academically and socially.  We want to be the best we can possibly be and reach our school target of 97%. We have to make a concerted effort in order to improve attendance and punctuality.

Every minute of every lesson counts!

Be in to win!

Be on time and in school every day!

Summer has arrived!

26th May 2023Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope everyone is well and has been enjoying the fantastic weather on offer over the last week.

This week in school the children have been focusing on increasing their awareness and learning linked to keeping themselves safe in and out of school. The children have attended workshops led by Bedfordshire Police and staff from Inspire have also focused on water safety. Thank you to staff who have organised these opportunities.

It was great to see a huge number of children last Friday for their reward for reading regularly at home. It is clear that we will have some children earn their Reading Ambassador badges by the end of the academic year. Thank you to the parents, carers and staff who are doing a great job ensuring their children are reading regularly at home. It makes a significant difference.

Last Friday Year 6 had individual photos and class photos were also taken. These photos should be with you very soon. It was pleasing to note the effort made with wearing correct school uniform on this day. It is important that all families make a concerted effort to wear the correct school uniform as outlined on our school website. Thank you to those who organised the logistics of having so many photos taken of children and staff!

The sporting involvement and success of the young people at Wigmore continues to be prioritised. Over the last 2 weeks we have had children take part in Quad Kids Athletics events and football matches. Thank you to those who have organised these opportunities.

It has been great talking to the young people in Year 1 about their class trips to Whipsnade Zoo. Thank you to everyone who has helped out to make these memorable days out of school for the children.

Well done to Hawthorn and Rowan Class who have had sharing assemblies over the last fortnight. Thank you to the parents and carers who were able to join us in school for these.

Well done Year 6!

12th May 2023Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope everyone is keeping well. It would be great to have some consistent, good weather in the last two weeks of this half term.

Well done to the children in Year 6 who have been involved in completing their end of Key Stage 2 assessments (SATS) this week. Thank you to all the staff and parents who have supported their educational journey to this point, they have been prepared well and have managed the week positively.

In order to find out what has been happening in and around your child’s year group do take the opportunity to look at the school blog section of our school website.

Following a suggestion from a parent on parents evening I am going to use my blog to keep families informed of important dates that are coming up soon and have included them below:

Monday 15th May – Year 1 Alder Zoo Trip, Football Match v Stopsley.

Tuesday 16th May – Year 3 and 4 Quadkids Athletics, Hawthorn Class Assembly.

Monday 22nd May – Safeguarding Awareness Week starts, Year 1 Birch Zoo trip.

Tuesday 23rd May – Year 5 and 6 Quadkids Athletics, Rowan Class Assembly, Year 2 Fire Safety talk.

Wednesday 24th May – Year 1 Ash Zoo trip, Bedfordshire Police visiting school for different workshops.

Thursday 25th May – Inspire Sports Village visit school for Water Safety workshops, Bedfordshire Police visiting school for different workshops.

Friday 26th May – Inspire Sports Village visit school for Water Safety workshops, Putteridge High Year 6 transition PE event, Safeguarding awareness week Celebration assembly (no Gold Book this week).

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish Mrs Willis (Assistant Headteacher – Inclusion and Safeguarding) all the very best as she moves to a new role as Inclusion Lead in a large secondary school at the end of this half term. Mrs Willis has worked at Wigmore for a number of years and has had a positive impact in a range of different roles – starting as a class teacher and finishing up at Wigmore as Assistant Head. Her calming presence around the school will be missed. Mrs Clark (SEN Teacher) will be taking on the role of Inclusion Leader in the interim as we begin the process to recruit the best possible candidates to fill two separate posts – Inclusion Leader and Safeguarding Lead.

We are now coming to the end of our work on decimals. The children have given this such a good go and have made a lot of progress in the past few weeks. We are now looking ahead to our times table test in June. The tests will begin on the 12th June and will end on the 16th June. Your child will take their test at some point during this week. Please see the government guidance below for more information:

2023_Information_for_parents_Multiplication_tables_check_Nov_22_PDFA

You can use the website below to help your child practise in the lead up to the test:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

Science

This half term we have been learning all about animals (including humans). We began by learning all about human teeth. Did you know that each tooth has a unique function? Why not ask your child if they know the names of each tooth and what they do! The children in Year 4 used clay to create models of the human mouth! The finished pieces were amazing!

Computing

The children have been enjoying using a coding programme to create patterns, shapes and more! They have been providing the computers with a set of instructions to create some of the amazing pieces of work that you can see below!

We look forward to seeing all the hard work the children will do this month!

The Year 4 team 🙂

A great start to the Summer term!

21st April 2023Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope everyone is well and had a good break over the holiday period. The children have returned to school very settled and focused and there is a sense of hard work permeating from the classrooms.

Thank you to all the parents and carers who attended parent consultations this week and during the week before the holidays. I hope you found these meetings helpful. Thank you to the teaching staff for preparing so well for these.

Just before the holidays we had a good number of children taking part in the Big Walk and Wheel. Choosing active travel options helps in so many different ways and it would be great if more families could continue walking, cycling and scooting to school to reduce congestion and pollution around the school. Unfortunately, I still receive regular emails and phone calls from local residents from both front and back gate areas that have parents and carers blocking their driveways. The health benefits of an active start to the day and some time outdoors are also very well researched.

Over the last few weeks it has been pleasing to see and hear about the sporting success of our Key Stage 2 swimming team who dominated the Luton Swimming Gala. Swimming is an important life skill and it is great to see and hear about children involved in swimming lessons and competing in this great sport. Wigmore has also had some success on the football pitch with the Year 5 and 6 team unbeaten against the other league winners from schools across Luton. Thank you to the staff and parents who are always willing to support and organise these opportunities for the young people at Wigmore.

Year 2 Poplar and Yew Class had the opportunity to visit the local park this week for their class attendance reward. It is important over the summer term that we work hard on improving attendance and punctuality at Wigmore. Our attendance is in line with the national average but we do have too many children who are persistently absent from school for unauthorised reasons and who are late too often.

Over the last few weeks Year 5 have been visiting the National Space Centre in Leicester to launch their Science learning. Mr Marshall has also been organising a residential trip for when these pupils are in Year 6. Trips and visitors to school continue to improve at Wigmore and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff for their efforts with organising these.

Eid Mubarak to all our families who are celebrating this weekend!

Springing into the final week of term!

24th March 2023Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope everyone is keeping well and has been enjoying the better weather spring has offered over the last few days.

Next week we will be welcoming parents and carers into school for parents evening. You will have had the opportunity to book an appointment time with your child’s class teacher for these very important progress updates. Senior leaders have been meeting with class teachers throughout the week looking at the progress of the children in reading, writing and maths and these meetings have been very productive.

This week audiences have been wowed by the standard of performance in our Year 3 and 4 production – A Big Green Adventure. The children put on an amazing show and have been well supported by the Wigmore staff who have very high expectations when it comes to standards of performing and singing. Thank you to all the parents and carers who provided amazing support with costumes, learning lines and for being a respectful and supportive audience during the performances. We hope that you also gained some very important learning about how you can play your part to address environmental issues.

Last week in school the children had some amazing opportunities in class to learn about science. This learning was celebrated in assemblies for different classes on Friday and I do hope the children conversed positively about their learning in science at home.  Thank you to the teachers for planning so many great activities and thanks to the parents and carers who were able to join us in school on Friday for the assemblies.

We are very fortunate at Wigmore to have children being involved in so many different opportunities to be active. This can only come about due to the hard work of the adults who provide these opportunities for the children. I have listed a number of these events below, well done to all who have taken part:

  • Year 5 and 6 This Girl Can Sports Festival
  • Year 3 and 4 Boys Football Tournament
  • Queen Elizabeth Sports Leaders supporting learning in Year 3 and 4
  • Cross Country Relays
  • Year 3 and 4 Adventure Games afternoon
  • SEND Sports Festival
  • The Big Pedal (it would be great to keep this going all year round to reduce traffic congestion around school)

Thank you to the families who were able to support the Travelling Book Fair in school. The books that you purchased has resulted in school being able to spend an additional £390 on new books for our school library. Our school library will be well stocked with some amazing new titles very soon. We are also going to be undertaking some decorating works in the library to make it look brilliant!

Well done to Beech class for leading an amazing sharing assembly last week. Thank you to the parents who were able to attend and to the staff for leading the children so well.

The children have also had the opportunity to learn about the religious observance of Holi (Hindu faith) and Ramadan (Islamic faith) over the last few weeks. Children and members of staff from these faith backgrounds have led assemblies in school and I am pleased to hear how respectful the children have been in school. This demonstrates the children have a good understanding of the importance of the British value of tolerance. It is everyone’s responsibility to be respectful of all different faith backgrounds and cultures. We can learn so much from one another in our amazing diverse school community.

I wish those families observing Ramadan a peaceful and blessed month with your families.

A belated Happy Holi to those families who celebrated this day recently. I wish you and your families a year of happiness.

As this is my final blog of the Spring term I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Easter holidays and to our families celebrating Easter – Happy Easter!

A hive of activity creates a real buzz for learning!

3rd March 2023Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

So many exciting learning opportunities in and out of the classrooms over the past fortnight at Wigmore. Thank you to all who have been involved in organising these opportunities for the children and others.

Firstly, thank you to all the families who contributed to our non-uniform and cake sale day to raise much needed funds for the earthquake relief effort in Turkey and Syria. Your kindness and generosity resulted in an impressive £1079.38 raised.

Last week all Year 1 classes had the opportunity to take part in a walk around the local area to Wigmore Valley Park. The children and staff had a great time and felt very well supported by a number of parent volunteers.

This week in school we have celebrated the joy of reading for World Book Day. Yesterday the children were involved in a range of activities in their class and with other classes and today we have had children and adults in school dressed as one of the favourite book characters. Reading is at the core of the curriculum and we want children at Wigmore to have a love of reading for pleasure by reading for at least 10 minutes at home every night.

Year 2 Yew Class and Year 4 Willow Class both had sharing assemblies and did a great job showcasing their learning with the rest of their key stage and families. We have the Year 3 and 4 production coming up very soon which is always a real treat!

On the sporting front we have had children participate in a Year 3 and 4 Multi Sports Activity event at Inspire, a dance workshop in school, a Year 5 football tournament and some children recently attended a PE Rewards trip to Climb Quest in Milton Keynes. So many children have excellent behaviour for learning at Wigmore but places were limited on this trip and those who attended thoroughly deserved their opportunity. The children have access to some very high quality PE at Wigmore and will benefit enormously from this regular physical activity.

Well done to all our award winners listed below.

Amazing sunsets and amazing things happening in school!

10th February 2023Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope everyone is keeping well and looking forward to the February half term break. I also hope people have taken the opportunity to see some of the amazing sunsets and sunrises this week.

Our value of the month of February is honesty. This was launched in assembly on Monday 30th January and the adults in school will be looking for children who demonstrate this value consistently in school. Congratulations to our award winners for demonstrating the value of loyalty throughout January.

All Year 2 classes have recently had fantastic outings to Whipsnade Zoo and Year 3 had a brilliant stone age day last week. This week our school choir took part in Young Voices at Wembley Arena. Thank you to all involved and to those who have organized these opportunities for the young people at Wigmore.

Thank you to those families who supported the Film Night and Non-Uniform Day in school recently. All proceeds raised from this will go to further outdoor developments. We have also been very fortunate to have families purchase different books from our Amazon wishlist. Thank you for being so kind and supportive of what we are aiming to achieve as a school.

This week we have also been focusing on children’s mental health in school. It is important that we all recognize that good mental, physical and social health are linked to securing positive well-being. The theme for the week has been “Let’s connect” good face-to-face social health can contribute positively to individual well-being. Thank you to the staff for planning some interesting activities linked to mental health and well-being in the classrooms this week.

On Tuesday we have also had children learning about the importance of staying safe on-line. Thank you to the parents and carers who were able to attend our learning showcase assemblies. It is essential that all our families aim to ensure that they follow the important messages the children delivered in the assemblies. Technology moves very fast and it is an unfortunate fact that there are some individuals that see using technology as a way to exploit, groom and abuse innocent young people. Our first priority as a school is keep all children safe and well, I am sure an overwhelming number of parents and carers prioritise the same things in the family home. Well done to the children who articulated their learning so well on Wednesday.

Special mention to Year 1 Alder who also had their class sharing assembly this week and to different groups of children who have represented the school at basketball, cricket and cross country running over the last two weeks.
