Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope everyone is keeping well and looking forward to the February half term break. I also hope people have taken the opportunity to see some of the amazing sunsets and sunrises this week.
Our value of the month of February is honesty. This was launched in assembly on Monday 30th January and the adults in school will be looking for children who demonstrate this value consistently in school. Congratulations to our award winners for demonstrating the value of loyalty throughout January.
All Year 2 classes have recently had fantastic outings to Whipsnade Zoo and Year 3 had a brilliant stone age day last week. This week our school choir took part in Young Voices at Wembley Arena. Thank you to all involved and to those who have organized these opportunities for the young people at Wigmore.
Thank you to those families who supported the Film Night and Non-Uniform Day in school recently. All proceeds raised from this will go to further outdoor developments. We have also been very fortunate to have families purchase different books from our Amazon wishlist. Thank you for being so kind and supportive of what we are aiming to achieve as a school.
This week we have also been focusing on children’s mental health in school. It is important that we all recognize that good mental, physical and social health are linked to securing positive well-being. The theme for the week has been “Let’s connect” good face-to-face social health can contribute positively to individual well-being. Thank you to the staff for planning some interesting activities linked to mental health and well-being in the classrooms this week.
On Tuesday we have also had children learning about the importance of staying safe on-line. Thank you to the parents and carers who were able to attend our learning showcase assemblies. It is essential that all our families aim to ensure that they follow the important messages the children delivered in the assemblies. Technology moves very fast and it is an unfortunate fact that there are some individuals that see using technology as a way to exploit, groom and abuse innocent young people. Our first priority as a school is keep all children safe and well, I am sure an overwhelming number of parents and carers prioritise the same things in the family home. Well done to the children who articulated their learning so well on Wednesday.
Special mention to Year 1 Alder who also had their class sharing assembly this week and to different groups of children who have represented the school at basketball, cricket and cross country running over the last two weeks.

Year 5 song writing with The Young’uns
Year 5 have been working with The Young’uns and Tom Kitching to write a folk song all about Luton and Wigmore’s heritage. They thoroughly enjoyed learning about Luton’s early days and how it has developed into a diverse and multicultural town.
Enjoy listening to the song that they worked hard to write together.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Over the last two weeks children in different classes continue to have some amazing learning opportunities in and out of the classroom. All of these opportunities are the small steps we are making on our journey of continuous improvement.
Thank you to all who have been involved in planning and taking part in the following:
- Year 2 had a fantastic trip to Whipsnade Zoo.
- Year 5 have been involved in a writing and music project with folk music band The Young Uns, they have produced some excellent writing linked to local history and our school which is now a song!
- Year 5 and 6 visited Queen Elizabeth School for their school pantomime.
- Two of our Year 4 classes have been linking with children and staff at Warden Hill Junior School on different activities as part of the Linking Network.
- There was an opportunity for parents to attend the Share and Learn session in the Early Years and for a great Conker Class Sharing Assembly.
- On the sporting front children continue to have access to high quality PE sessions which are supported by opportunities to compete against other schools in a Key Stage 1 multisport event and a basketball event.
- Today was a non-uniform day to continue to raise funds to develop the outdoor space at Wigmore.
- There have also been a range of assemblies on Chinese New Year, Motivation, Perseverance and our usual singing and celebration assemblies.
- Individual school photos took place last week.
By the end of the day today all class blogs will have been updated. If you would like to know what has been happening in and around your child’s year group please visit their class blog.
On return after the Christmas holidays I noticed an improvement in punctuality. However, over the last week this has seemed to slip again and we have a number of children who are arriving late to school on a consistent basis. Your child/children are reliant on the adults they live with to ensure they arrive on time in school. I would like to see an improvement in this area.
Thank you to those families who consistently use the Asda Car Park at school drop off and pick up. This makes Twyford Drive safe and the air is less polluted around our school. I understand that it has been cold this week but please do not leave your engine idling at school drop off or pick up time. Please consider the health and well-being of all members of our community and the environment.

Dear Parents and Carers,
Happy New Year to all our families! 2023 at Wigmore has started on a positive note. The children have returned to the classrooms very well – there is real sense of hard work, commitment and good behaviour for learning permeating from the classrooms.
Some great successes in the sporting arena and some interesting trips this week as well. Thank you to the adults who have organised these opportunities for the children and for providing consistent high quality learning opportunities for the children in the classroom on a daily basis.

I hope everyone is well and has settled into positive routines in the lead up to the festive season.
Over the last few weeks senior staff have been busy looking at a range of books, planning and dropping into lessons to ensure the children are accessing high quality learning opportunities at Wigmore. This is always the best part of the job!
Anti-Bullying Week – Reach Out
This afternoon we welcomed families into school to showcase the learning the children have been completing in class linked to this important week. We have also had assemblies on the theme for the week and last week the children also learnt about World Kindness Day. Let’s make kindness the norm in everything we do – it is an important life skill to be kind with our thoughts, actions and words. Thank you to the adults for creating some amazing learning opportunities for the young people at Wigmore this week.
High expectations in assemblies
Well done to the children in Year 2 Poplar and Year 5 Linden class who have led amazing assemblies over the last two weeks. We have also had different assemblies on Remembrance Day and a special on-line assembly focused on Internet Safety – thank you to Mr Pateman and Mrs Willis for organising this. Thank you to the parents and carers who have been in school to support their children and to the adults for making sure the children do their very best in the assemblies.
Share and Learn
On Wednesday morning we welcomed parents and carers into the Foundation Stage for the first share and learn of the year. The children in Foundation get along so well and their behaviour for learning is excellent. Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend this and to the adults for organising another great morning in school.
Children in Need
Thank you to all who made the effort to donate to our non-uniform day for Children in Need. Your donations will go along way!

Over the next few weeks it is essential that everyone makes a big effort to improve attendance and punctuality. We want to see more classes moving around the “Classopoly” Board and earning treasure for their class. Be in to win! Be in to learn! I will be monitoring attendance closely and will be in touch and having important conversations with families who are causing concern.

Well done to the children who took part in the Year 3/4 Sports Hall Athletics, SEN Sports Festival and Futsal tournament over the past two weeks. Accessing these opportunities is only made possible due to the hard work of Mr Marshall and Mr Whadcoat. Thank you to them both for all the effort they put into the children at Wigmore.
New to Reception in 2023
This week I welcomed prospective parents for September 2023 Reception intake. It was good to see some new faces. We have another event planned for 10th January. If you know of anyone who is looking for a school place do take the opportunity to spread the good work about what we do.
Thank you Mrs Bradley and best wishes for your retirement!
As you will know Mrs Bradley is currently off school and recovering well from surgery in September. During her time off she has made the decision to spend more time with her family and retire from the teaching profession at the end of the Autumn term. She has served the Wigmore community admirably since 1999 in a number of different roles. Every child, parent and staff member talk positively of her warmth and calmness, this is evidenced around the school on a daily basis and the children will be able to benefit from this expertise, although she has retired she has kindly agreed to join us in school for 3 days a week to support our Year 6 pupils up until the end of May as they prepare for their transition to high school. I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for her 23 years of dedicated service to the Wigmore school community. We will inform parents and carers of our recruitment for a new Assistant Headteacher for Key Stage 2 once the process has been completed.

Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope everyone had a restful half term break and has made a positive start to the beginning of this half term.
Happy Diwali to all our families who celebrated this religious festival during the half term break. During the week before half term the children had the opportunity to learn about this important celebration in assembly. Thank you to the teachers to led these assemblies.
On Monday of this week we had a fantastic showcase of children’s learning they completed over the month of October on influential people from minority ethnic backgrounds as a way of marking Black History Month. Children in Key Stage 2 gathered for an assembly with an excellent number of parents and carers present. Volunteers from each year group shared their learning to the audience gathered. Key Stage 1 displayed their work in the small hall and parents had the opportunity to see what they have been learning about. There is also a display in our Foundatation stage classrooms which showcase their learning. These opportunities to come together to celebrate learning and to recognise the signifcant barriers others have had to face in their lives provide us with an important time to reflect on how we can all contribute positively to society. The influential historical figures the children have been learning about provide us with an excellent example of resilience, determination and courage – values that we will continue to promote as a school. Wigmore is a wonderfully diverse community and this is something to celebrate. Thank you to all who contrbuted to this learning showcase.
On Friday 18th November we will be having another learning showcase at the end of Anti-Bullying week. Parents and carers will be invited to attend different assemblies on this day, due to the bumper attendance we had at our last learning showcase we will plan to have the assemblies at different times with children separated into Key Stage 1, Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2. Times will be communicated with parents early next week.
CAMH Parent Workshop
Thank you to the parents and carers who attended the recent CAMH workshop held in school. Many thanks to our school staff and CAMH for offering this wonderful learning opportunity.
Parents Evening
Thank you to the parents and carers who attended parents evening before half term. We hope your appointment provided you with an important update on the progress of your child and how they have settled into their new year group. Thank you to the staff for preparing well for these important updates.
Sports hall athletics
Well done to the children who took part in the sports hall athletics the week before half term. Wigmore has qualified for the town finals so there will be further opportunities for these children to be active over the coming weeks. Thanks to the adults who organised this opportunity for the children.
Football team success
Congratulations to the school football team for an impressive performance in their final game of 2022. A positive 4 nil victory over Dallow School! Thanks to all those who helped organise this opportunity for the team.
Olaf Falafel author visit
On the Friday before half term the school was treated to a visit from famous author and comedian Olaf Falafel. The children and staff commented positively on the morning and we hope this inspires children with their writing and willingness to read for pleasure and enjoyment at home. Olaf also focused on some drawing skills as well which the children thoroughly enjoyed. Drawing and art is a very good form of relaxation and fine motor development. It was pleasing to see some of the quality drawings the children produced. Thank you Olaf and the adults in school who organised this great opportunity for the young people at Wigmore.
Hot chocolate for Give Me Ten Milestone achievers
Well done to the children who achieved the 25 times milestone in quick time. There were 3 classes that will also receive additional playtime for having the most children in their class race to 25! Thank you to the adults for organising these rewards and incentives to get more children reading regularly at home at Wigmore. Reading is the key that opens the door to success!
Outdoor environment improvements and Film Night
Over the next few weeks some significant works to improve the Year 5 and 6 playground will be taking place. It is an exciting time to see the progress we are making to improving the outdoor environment so children have more opportunities to be active at playtimes and lunchtimes. It is important that all play equipment is not used before school starts and at the end of the school day.
The money raised from the school film night before half term will be put towards these essential improvements. Thank you to the staff who organised the film night and the families who regularly support school fundraising opportunities.
Clocks going back, darker mornings and evening – please use the Asda car park
Over the weekend the clocks have gone back which results in darker mornings and evenings. In order to keep all members of our community safe please use the Asda car park at school drop off and pick up times or choose active forms of travel to get to and from school. Thank you to those parents and carers who consistently follow these simple safety measures to keep everyone safe.
SEN Coffee morning with guest speaker from CAMH
Thank you to the parents who attended the SEN coffee morning and to the adults who organised this important get together. Huge thanks to CAMH for offering their support with an additional guest speaker.
Year 5 Egyptian Day
On Wednesday Year 5 had a fantastic Egyptian day in school. Thank you to all who took part in and to those who organised the day. Ancient Egypt is a wonderful topic for the children to learn about. Thank you to the parents who were in school to support this event and for being so prompt with payments for the in school experience.
Year 2 Fire Safety Visit and Great Fire of London
Yesterday and today the children in Year 2 were involved in a range of different activities linked to the learning on the great fire of London. Thank you to all who took part in the activities and to those who organised the day. Another great opportunity to enrich the curriculum for the children.
Year 3 Reptile Experience
Year 3 welcomed some interesting reptiles to Wigmore today to provide the stimulus for some writing they will be doing over the next few weeks. Thank you to the children for their involvement and to the adults who organised this opportunity to provide the motivation to produce some amazing written work. I hope everyone is keeping well.
There have been a number of great things happening in and around school for all members of our school community. Thank you to all involved in the organisation of these opportunities for the young people and families at Wigmore. It is important that we all try to make the most of every opportunity we have in order to continue growing and learning.
Reading
Counting towards the Give Me Ten milestone of 25 times has started and next Friday will be the first hot chocolate for those who have reached this milestone. There will also be a special prize for the class who has the most children reaching this milestone.
Thank you to the parents and carers who attended our workshop on ways to support with reading at home. We hope you found this information useful and practical.
Next Friday we have local author Olaf Falafel visiting the children in Key Stage 2 to continue to promote the enjoyment and pleasure we can take from reading. My conversations with other local Headteachers suggest that Olaf will be great inspiration and entertainment for the children. Information on how to get a signed copy of one of Olaf’s books has been shared with all families.

The children have been working incredibly hard in class learning about significant historical identities from different ethnic backgrounds. On Monday 31st October at 2:45 pm the children will be showcasing their learning and we would like to invite parents and carers into school for this. It is so important that we learn about and respect the contributions all cultures have to society.
Monday Coffee Mornings in the Family Room
Thank you to those parents and carers who have attended recent coffee mornings and to our family workers for facilitating this important social opportunity. Good social health contributes positively to well-being in so many different ways.
Hello Yellow Day
It was great to see so many children in school in bright colours, mostly yellow, to mark World Mental Health Day on Monday. The children had special assemblies on Monday afternoon to learn about the importance of good mental health.
CAMH Workshop
Thank you to the parents and carers that attended our a workshop in school led by CAMH. It was very well attended and we hope you found it useful. Thank you to the adults in school who organised this opportunity for our parents and carers.
Film Night
Thank you to the families who supported our film night yesterday to raise much needed funds to improve the learning environment at Wigmore further. Thank you to all the adults who organised the event and supervised the children on the evening.
Pupil progress
Next week we have parents evening on Tuesday and Wednesday after school. It is important that all parents and carers attend these important consultations. Senior leaders have been meeting with class teachers this week looking at the progress the children have made since the beginning of this academic year. It is good to see that children are responding positively to the high expectations set by adults in school.

Well done to the children who have taken part in different sporting opportunities over the last 2 weeks. Thanks must go to the adults who organise and prepare the children so well to take part in these events. It is great to have the children share their experiences on Friday in Celebration assembly. A number of different children have taken part in the following:
- Year 3 and 4 Multi Sports Festival at Inspire
- Year 5 and 6 Girls Rugby at Luton Rugby Club
- Key Stage 1 Sports Festival at Inspire
- First football match of the season resulting in a 6-2 victory to Wigmore

ATTEND TO ACHIEVE!
At Wigmore we have to aim to be here every day! Excellent attendance is 97% or above. There are strong links between good attendance and good progress in school, both academically and socially. We want to be the best we can possibly be and reach our school target of 97%. We have to make a concerted effort in order to improve attendance and punctuality.
Our Classopoly Competition will be launched in the next few weeks. If your child’s class has attendance of over 97% they will make progress towards earning prizes for their class. Let’s work together and support each other to make sure all children are in school every day.
