Year 3 Blog

17th November 2021Daniel Pateman

Year 3 have continued to enjoy their writing unit on ‘Why Dragons Are Afraid of Mice’ and this week wrote brilliant explanations of why dragons roar, capture princesses and build nests. The teachers have been especially impressed with the use of interesting adjectives such as petrified, hideous, fierce and beady. We have also been reading different books across the three classes which are:

Willow – The Boy at the Back of the Class

Maple – Arthur and the Golden Rope

Elm – Tin Forest

In maths we have started our new unit of multiplication. The learners in Year 3 have begun this area of mathematics with an outstanding knowledge of their 3 times tables thanks to their hard work and dedication at home. In future lessons, we will be exploring division fact families as well as looking at the 4 and 8 times tables.

In science we have enjoyed delving deeper into our brand new rock topic. We have worked in groups to explore and handle a range of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, looking closely at how they were formed and their properties. In addition, the children transformed into news reporters to explain the process of fossilisation –  ask your child about this at home. Can they remember the key vocabulary?

During our French lessons over the last few weeks, we have been learning the names of various animals. It has been great fun using songs to develop our language skills as well as games to help us with our new vocabulary. Did you know, ‘un lapin’ is a rabbit in French? Why not ask your child which other animals they know how to say.

Next week we will be focusing on our 4 and 8 times tables. In English we will conclude our explanation text unit ready to start our new sequence based on narratives. We’ll be coding in computing, learning about soil in science and continuing to practice our drumming skills with Billy.

Don’t forget to check the Wigmore twitter @WigmorePrimary for regular updates.

Year 5 Blog 14th October 2021

15th October 2021Karen Owen

It has been a very busy half term for year 5. The children have settled well into their classes and many of them have made new friends. It is lovely to see them all being able to mix on the playground and have lunch with those from other classes in the hall.

The children have been really enjoying their science topic on materials. They have:-

  • Looked at the properties of a range of materials
  • Identified uses for materials based on those properties
  • Investigated what would be the best thermal insulator
  • Decided what would be the best material for a new lunch box
  • Recorded the results in a graph.
  • Identified reversible and irreversible changes

Here is one of the graphs they produced.

They are looking forward to carrying out some investigations into soluble and insoluble materials next week.

In English we have written poems about a river and for National Poetry day the children wrote poems about the delights of different countries foods. We were very impressed with their enthusiasm for the topics. Currently we are looking at how a writer completes an opening and build up to a suspense story. In their grammar lessons they looked at three new sentences structures, before using those in a short burst write, inspired by a short film clip. Below is one of the many excellent pieces they produced.

We have now sent home new reading records and books to all the children. Those who have only received a reading record are considered a free reader and can read any books of their choice. Please encourage them to read a range of fiction and non-fiction books. As part of the school ‘Give me Ten’ challenge we are asking all children to spend at least ten minutes a day reading a book and recording that in their reading records. The reading books need to be in school every day and an adult will check them at least once a week. The children have a display in their classroom which shows their progress up the challenge wall.

Next half term we will be starting work on our topic of Ancient Egypt. The children will be using their geography skills to look at the physical features of the country, what life was like for ordinary people, the process of mummification, how the pyramids were built and the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. As part of their DT work the children will make a Shaduf. So exciting times ahead.

We have had a very busy half term in year 4. The children have settled back into school well.

Some of the highlights from this term have been:

Maths – In Maths we have been doing work on place value, leading on to rounding and negative number.

Topic – We have benn learning about the Roman invasion of Britain and the main differences between the Romans and the Celts.

ICT – Learning to code using Purple Mash

French – In French we have learnt to say our name, how old we are and where we live.

RE – In RE we have been learning about how different religions worship.

Coming up

Next week we will be designing and creating our own Roman shields.  After half term, in science we will be studying Sound and in Maths we will be covering the four operations
