Year 3

23rd May 2022Daniel Pateman

Maths

Our fractions unit is coming to an end! Recently, Year 3 have been learning about equivalent fractions, comparing and ordering fractions and adding and subtracting them. This has provided a good challenge for the children but they have shown great resilience and have made great progress.

Below is a fraction wall. Can your children explain what an equivalent fraction is to you…?

Here’s a great song all about fractions too!

Digital art

We have recently started our new digital art unit! The children have been using SMART Notebook to create, colour and copy shapes to create pieces of art. They have been so enthusiastic about this topic and have created some wonderful pieces of art! Take a look at this amazing artwork by one of our learners!

Topic

Our topic is all about the great town of Luton. In the past few weeks, we have been studying the impact that the airport has had on the town and what it was like to be a straw plaiter. We have also been discussing the children’s favourite parts of Luton and it’s cultural demographics. This has provided lovely discussion about what makes our town so special. Take a look at this fantastic poster that one of our learners has created!

Year 1 Summer Blog 2

18th May 2022Hilary Peacock

The weather is warming up and our brains are on fire!  We started this week by looking at the story of Little Red Riding Hood.  Monday morning we headed to the nature area to find envelopes with puzzle pieces in.  When we found them all we worked together in teams to put the puzzle together.  We then had to think about what story we would be focusing on for the next couple of weeks.

Over the next couple of weeks we will be identifying the main characters, the setting and repetitive language.   We will finish the unit by recounting the story.

In Maths we have started our summer work book and we are looking at counting in 10s, 5s and 2s.  We have been making equal groups, adding equal groups and making simple arrays.  We will then move on to division and making equal groups and sharing equally.  Each of these units ends in solving word problems.

In other subjects we have been talking about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores and been able to recognize which animals come under these groups.

Finally, we are continuing to work hard in preparation for the Phonics Screening Check that is happening after half term.  You should have received a letter that explains what the check is and what you can do to help at home.  Please see the following website for resources to prepare the children for this:

Flying start into Summer for Year 1

28th April 2022Ben White

What a great start to the summer term it has been for the children in Year 1. Everyone has been working their socks off.

In English we have begun our new topic of No-Bot Robot.  Children will be learning the story and creating their own version over next few weeks.  Ask your child to perform the story for you – they should be able to tell you it with the actions!

In Maths we are learning about capacity. The children will be exploring how to measure liquid and using containers and water to compare volumes.

Our new topic All About Animals has also kicked of this week and children have been learning about different types of animals.  This has included learning some new words such as invertebrate, mammal and amphibian as wells as talking about more familiar words such as bird, fish and reptile. Please talk about these animals with the children and look out for different types of animals in books and stories.

Our computing links nicely with our Topic lessons as we are talking about sorting.  In the coming weeks we will be using computer software to sort information into groups.  Children are able to log onto PurpleMash at home, please speak to your child’s class teacher if you require a log in reminder.

Finally, we are working hard in preparation for the Phonics Screening Check in a few weeks.  You should have received a letter that explains what the check is and what you can do to help at home.  Please see the following website for resources to prepare the children for this:

Maths

This half term we have been looking at measuring length. Each class has been involved in exciting practical lessons such as answering the question ‘does your height affect how far you can jump’. The children have loved using metre sticks, measuring tapes and rulers to measure objects and perimeters accurately. We have also been outside measuring the perimeter of the field using trundle wheels. In class, the children have been showing a great understanding of conversion. We have been converting centimetres into millimetres and centimetres into metres.

Performance

We definitely have some stars in the making in Year 3. Our performance of ‘Jill and Fred’s most Hysterical Historical Adventure’ is ready for audiences. The children and staff are excited to welcome you all to the big hall on Tuesday 29th of March or Wednesday 30th of March. The runtime is roughly an hour and a half. An amazing amount of hard work has been put into this production. Lines were promptly memorized, songs were quickly learnt and the teachers couldn’t be prouder! It has helped our young people immensely with their confidence and we are sure that you will enjoy it. We can’t wait to see you all there!

End of Spring Term

25th March 2022Almas Anwar

Reading and Writing

We have been looking at a diary recount linked to the book The Tunnel by Anthony Browne.  We have looked at the features of a diary and identified the features in some children’s books (Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney and Dork Diaries by Rachel Renee Russell.

We have done some reading comprehension assessments this week based on a Greek Myth and an Information Text on Kites.

Maths

In maths, we have been looking at fractions, equivalence, simplifying, and adding and subtracting.  We continue to practise the four operations and applying these to problem solving.

Science

In science we have looked at the different states of matter and the particle arrangements of these.  The children had lots of fun finding the weight of carbon dioxide in a fizzy drink and investigating the melting point of chocolate and amazingly they were not tempted to eat any but that’s only because the teachers ate it all!

Easter Production

We have been extremely busy learning our words and songs for the performance and the children and staff are very much looking forward to sharing the finished article with you next week.  There are still plenty of tickets available for the Tuesday am performance and limited numbers available for Wednesday’s pm performance.  Looking forward to seeing you there!

At the beginning of the next term:

English – We will be developing setting and character within a story focused on a fantasy character.  The children will then be writing their own fantasy tale at the end of this unit.

Reading – Each class will be looking at a new book this term, our three texts are Krindlekrax, One Plastic Bag, UG, Boy Genius of the Stone Age. Using these texts, we will teach comprehension skills such as prediction, inference, retrieval and vocabulary in context.

Maths – We will be looking at decimals for the first few weeks which links well to the fractions work we are currently completing.

Science – After half term we will be looking at Electricity in the first week back, where children will be looking at which appliances use electricity, renewable and non-renewable energy sources and creating circuits.

ICT – This term we will be using some sessions to practise times tables ahead of the times tables test later this term.

RE – We will be starting our new topic on festivals.

Making memories up to March…

4th March 2022Maryia Hussain

We have been very busy again in Year 2 this week!

We celebrated World Book Day and it was fabulous to see the children all dressed up as their favourite book characters. We enjoyed sharing books, completing book quizzes and writing about what we dressed up as.

Have a look at some of our wonderful costumes below:

The children have all settled back into school after the half term break.

This week in English, we have started to use a story map to describe “The Storm Owl”. In the next few weeks, we will be making changes to the text. We also created a toolkit to help us identify the features of a non-chronological report.

In Maths this week children learnt how to read and
construct tally charts and pictograms.

Here is some key vocabulary that children will need to know as part of the learning in this “Statistics” unit:
 tally chart, tally
 pictogram
 block diagram
 table
 more, less, most, least
 favourite, popular
 equal
 represent, symbol, key, information
 total, altogether
 compare

In Science this half term we have started our topic: “The Wonderful World Of Plants”. This week we planted cress seeds. We placed one pot in a dark place and the other on a window sill to investigate whether plants require sunlight to grow. We will be observing the results over the next few weeks. Children will be drawing each stage of the plant’s growth cycle.

In Topic we have been learning about “The Journey of a Banana”. Have a look at some of the children’s amazing work produced below:

Year 5 Blog Spring 1

28th January 2022Karen Owen

The children in year 5 have obviously had a restful and enjoyable Christmas break as they have returned to school full of energy and excitement for the topics we are doing this term.

Reading and Writing

The children have been studying four poems about dreams and expectations that people have for when they are older. They have enjoyed investigating different jobs that they could do, such as a snake venom collector, professional cuddler or a dog surfing instructor! As part of their grammar work they have looked at adverbs of possibility, such as maybe and certainly, along with modal verbs, such as should, could and ought to. They have then brought all their learning together by writing their own poem to themselves about what they could be. They have also been asked to learn how to perform their poem over the next week as they will be presenting them to the rest of the class. Here are a couple of examples of the excellent work they have achieved.

The children are enjoying their new shared class readers, especially Oak class who can’t wait for the next instalment of Cosmic each day.

Maths

Our topic for the start of this term has been formal methods of multiplication and division. The children have been multiplying 4 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers using the column method and have risen to the challenges we have set of completing missing number calculations. The question below is an example. Why not ask your child to explain how to solve it?

The children have also spent time looking at how to divide a four digit number by a 2 digit number using short division ( often called the bus stop method). They had a range of problems to solve such as real life dilemmas, missing numbers and then explaining where mistakes have been made. Can your child explain where the mistake is in this question?

Topic

The children have been working hard on their art skills by first learning how to draw a face using the correct proportions. They then used their new skills to design their own Pharaoh’s mask, before finally using collage to add colour and texture. Have a look at the pictures below showing the learning journey.

Science

The children have just started the topic they have all been excited about – Earth and Space. They have been sharing what they already know about the subject, what they would like to know before becoming familiar with the key vocabulary.

In the next few weeks:

In English the children will start their new Talk for writing unit based on the tale of Beowulf.

We will be looking at fractions in Maths – taking away numbers within 20 and going onto looking at numbers up to 50.

Science will see us find out more about individual planets and in RE the children will continue to explore the Hindu religion.

Year 6 blog – 19/1/22

19th January 2022Paul Brady

Happy new year!.

Year 6 have settled back in to their routines very well. We are in the final run up to the SATs exams in mid May and there is still lots to learn and revise! We want the children to perform as well as they possibly can in the SATs so we will be working very hard over the next few months.

In English we have started learning about a new genre – Spy stories. The children are currently busy learning about the skills needed to produce a good spy story before eventually producing one of their own. Take a look at some of our work so far:

In maths we have started the new year revising fractions, decimals and percentages. The children have revised how to add and subtract fractions as well as how to order fractions even when they have different denominators. We will be looking at how to multiply and divide fractions over the coming weeks as well as revising how fractions are related to decimals and percentages. Here is a good example of some of the revision we have done so far:

In Science the children have been learning about the human body – specifically the circulatory system. We have made models of the heart and will be moving on to discuss the lungs and we will be writing a pamphlet about how to stay healthy.

The children have also started two new PE topics: Striking & Fielding and Pilates. In RE they have had some interesting discussions in their new topic of Justice and Poverty and in music we have listen to and appraised the song ‘You’ve Got a Friend’ by Carole King.

As you can see, we are very busy in year 6 having fun as well as working hard.

Our Learning

English- Journey

The children have thoroughly enjoyed going on an adventure with the little girl in this wonderful wordless picture book. We have learned how to use interesting openers, exciting vocabulary, direct speech and how to write exhilarating action sequences. The teachers across Year 3 have been extremely impressed with the narrative writing produced. Keep up the brilliant work!

Maths- Multiplication and Division

We have continued to consolidate our times tables knowledge and the children can confidently multiply numbers by 3,4 and 8. In our maths lessons this week, we have used a range of practical resources to deepen our understanding of division. Don’t forget to practise your times tables and division knowledge by playing the following game: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button.

Music – Drumming

The children have loved their music lessons with Billy this term. They have enjoyed creating their own percussion instruments, using them in a class band and working as part of a team.
