Year 2 blog

29th January 2024Daniel Pateman

Year 2

2024 is off to a flying start! Our Year 2’s have come back to school with a spring in their step – ready to learn and be their best. Here are just a few of the fantastic things we have been up to in Year 2:

Maths

It’s times tables time! The children in Year 2 have been learning their 2, 5 and 10 times tables! Currently, Rowan class are #1 in the school for TTRockstars with Poplar class not far behind. The children have been using counters to show equal groups as a way of visualising their times tables. Please encourage your child to login to their TTRockstars account so that they can develop fluency in maths.

Computing

We started off the year learning all about spreadsheets. The children collected data from their class about the types of houses that children live in. We then presented this data on our computers. Here are some of our pictograms:

PE

The children have really been enjoying learning about balance through their gymnastics unit in PE. They are making sure that they perform quietly and with pointy toes – all whilst making sure that they are showing balance.

English

If your child has come home talking about giraffes in the swimming pool then this will be because of our English unit. We have been writing to inform in English. We have written to parents to explain the dilemma of giraffes in the pool and we will soon be writing to parents as if an animal of their choice has invaded too! Here is the video that the children were shown:

The last few weeks in Year 4!

29th June 2023Daniel Pateman

What an incredible few weeks it has been! It’s coming to the end of term and we are starting to get the children ready in Year 5. It has been a great year with some truly memorable moments. This is what we have been up to recently:

The Linking Network

Elm and Willow class have been part of a national program called The Linking Network since the start of the year. They have been taking part in activities with Warden Hill Junior School and over the past two weeks they got to reunite with their peers from Warden Hill. ImageImageImage

Anglo Saxon trip

We were lucky enough to visit West Stow earlier in the term to find out how the Anglo Saxons used to live! We looked at a model village, artefacts and were able to ask one of the experts our questions.

Pizza making!

Throughout the next few weeks, each class will be designing and making their own pizzas! Elm class were the first to put on the chef aprons. The children were very happy with how their pizzas turned out – we hope you were able to try a slice!

Marvellous May!

9th May 2023Daniel Pateman

So many great things have been happening in Year 4. Here are just a few of them 🙂

Maths

We are now coming to the end of our work on decimals. The children have given this such a good go and have made a lot of progress in the past few weeks. We are now looking ahead to our times table test in June. The tests will begin on the 12th June and will end on the 16th June. Your child will take their test at some point during this week. Please see the government guidance below for more information:

You can use the website below to help your child practise in the lead up to the test:

Science

This half term we have been learning all about animals (including humans). We began by learning all about human teeth. Did you know that each tooth has a unique function? Why not ask your child if they know the names of each tooth and what they do! The children in Year 4 used clay to create models of the human mouth! The finished pieces were amazing!

Computing

The children have been enjoying using a coding programme to create patterns, shapes and more! They have been providing the computers with a set of instructions to create some of the amazing pieces of work that you can see below!

We look forward to seeing all the hard work the children will do this month!

The Year 4 team 🙂

Year 4 – Fantastic February!

2nd March 2023Daniel Pateman

Here are just some of the things that Year 4 have been up to!

Science

In science this half term, we are learning all about electricity. We have started off this unit by exploring the parts of a circuit and even creating our own circuits! The children were shocked to find out that the more cells added to a circuit, the brighter the light will be. See some of our budding scientists below:

World Book Day

Year 4 linked with Year 2 for some joint activities! The children really enjoyed taking part in a book scavenger hunt where they had to search for words in a collection of different books. Take a look at a wonderful poster created by one of our pupils too!

Maths

We are continuing to work on fractions this term! Can your child spot any equivalent fractions using the fraction wall below? What is a Fraction Wall? | Answered | Twinkl Teaching Wiki

The children have been learning that a fraction is a part of a whole. We are starting to learn how to add, subtract and convert fractions into mixed numbers.

Year 5 song writing

Year 5 song writing with The Young’uns

Year 5 have been working with The Young’uns and Tom Kitching to write a folk song all about Luton and Wigmore’s heritage. They thoroughly enjoyed learning about Luton’s early days and how it has developed into a diverse and multicultural town.

Enjoy listening to the song that they worked hard to write together.

Maths

Year 4 have started learning about multiplication and division in maths. This is a really important unit in Year 4 as we have our times table check in June. Below you can see how hard the children are working! Please make sure that you are helping your child practice their times tables on a regular basis.

Computing

We have been continuing to learn how to code! This week, the children have been learning coding a lamp to become a genie once it has been clicked three times. See if your child can explain the code below…

Anti-bullying week

As part of the Reach Out! Campaign, Year 4 have been hard at work creating an anti-bullying village! The children worked in pairs to design a house that contained messages of positivity for anyone going through bullying. Take a look at some of our houses!
