Independence – own your learning

15th November 2024Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been a busy and exciting start to the second half of the Autumn term.

This half term we are focusing on the value of independence, the ability of everyone in our school community to own their learning. Phase leaders have presented the award winners of our value for last half term and we look forward to seeing everyone focus on this important value in the lead up to the end of the Autumn term. It will require everyone to think carefully about the decisions they make in all aspects of learning.

Wigmore School have now taken on the organisation and running of Funtastic Club. Thank you to all who have been involved in making the transition as smooth as possible and if you require a place in our breakfast or after school club do not hesitate to contact the school office for more information. Thank you to all our parents and carers who have adapted well to the new systems and processes we have put in place to ensure the club runs smoothly for the children who attend.

Thank you to the parents and carers who were able to attend our first SEND Parent Information Session. Mrs Clark, Mrs Eversden and Miss Jackson have done a fantastic job organising different speakers to attend these sessions to provide important updates for parents and carers on a range of issues linked to supporting young people with special educational needs and disabilities. Mrs Clark and Mrs Eversden have also been dropping into lessons across the school this week with a focus on how well the children with SEND are being supported in lessons.

Last week in school it was great to hear and see the delights of children enjoying themselves at our school disco. Thank you to all who were involved in the organisation of this and to those staff who were able to stay to support the children to have a good time with their friends. The children looked fantastic in their costumes. The event raised much needed funding for the school.

This week senior leaders, one of our school governors and our writing subject leader – Mrs Parkar, visited classrooms to see writing in action across the school. It was great to see children across the school so engaged and motivated to write. The children are taking pride in their work and are using the models provided to support their own learning. It was also pleasing the see our children with special educational needs being supported well with different resources to support their writing in lessons. Well done to all involved!

Over the last few weeks the children have been involved in some very worthwhile learning about Remembrance Day and Anti Bullying. It has been great to see the work being produced by the children in these two areas and hearing about some of the lessons they have been involved in.

Children in different year groups have also been involved in different trips to Wardown Park and Wembley Stadium and have been very successful at the Sports Hall Athletics event at Inspire Sports Village. These opportunities are very important for the children and thanks must go to the adults in school who have organised these.

Well done to the children and adults in Acorns Class for leading a fantastic class assembly yesterday. Thank you to all the parents and carers who were able to attend this.

Thank you to all the families and staff who have been supporting the Asda Cashpot for Schools. So far your efforts have raised a total of £1818. With 15 days left it would be great if this number could pass the £2000 mark.

One of our teaching assistants, Mrs Clarke, has also been busy fundraising over the last year. She has been running a mile a day in support of Histiocytosis UK. If you would like to support her phenomenal efforts please feel free to donate on the link below. What an amazing effort! Inspirational in so many ways!

Over the last week I have had communications with a number of local residents about families parking in Twyford Drive at school drop off and collection time. Local residents have shared photos with me of parking at different times of the day and signficant traffic congestion in poor weather. This is having an impact on their daily lives and also makes school arrival and departure times unsafe for the children and families at Wigmore. There are a number of families who ignore our requests to use the Asda Car Park before and after school. Please be considerate of local residents and prioritise the safety of our school community by parking in the Asda Car Park. Thank you to the families who consistently use the Asda Car Park.

No room for racism

18th October 2024Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope everyone is keeping well.

Today in school the children have been wearing red and learning about the negative impact racism has on others. Discrimination, in all its forms, is unacceptable and it is only by educating people that we can do something about it. By working together change is possible. Please take the opportunity to speak to your child about the activities they have been completing in school today.

All parents and carers will be able to meet with their class teachers next week for parents evening. Make sure you take some time to have a look at the blog section of our school website and social media feed for all the updates of what is happening in and around school. The half term has flown past and the children have been involved in some amazing activities over the last fortnight.

Year 6 were involved in an Ancient Greek Day which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Thank to those who organised and supported this on the day.

The children have been working in mixed aged classes doing activities for Black History month, they will showcase their learning to one another next week in school. The logistics of making sure the children have an audience with enough space to share their learning has been a challenge and we appreciate your understanding with the changes we have had to make to the assemblies. Thank you to the staff who have been busy organising these amazing learning opportunities for the children.

It was great to see children involved in the mastering number programme and visit their maths lessons last week. The behaviour for learning across the school was exemplary and the children were actively engaged in using resources to support their maths learning. Well done to all involved.

We have had two fantastic sharing assemblies from Year 6 Oak and Year 2 Rowan classes. Thank you to all who were able to attend this and to the teachers and children for sharing their learning with such confidence.

This week we have also commenced our school tours for Foundation Class for September 2025. If you know anyone with children who are eligible to start school next academic year please direct them to contact the school office to book a place on a school tour.

On the sporting front it has been great to hear about recent successes on the football and rugby pitch. The children thoroughly enjoy these opportunities and a lot of time and effort goes into the organisation of sport at Wigmore. Well done to all involved. The benefits of physical activity are enormous.

Today we will be sending some information to parents and carers who have children that attend Funtastic Club. The school is taking on the responsiblity of organising and delivering high quality wrap around care for the children from after half term. I would like to thank the current Funtastic staff who have been involved in the process to ensure a smooth transiton is in place and to all the staff at Wigmore and the school governors who have supported me throughout the process. If you have any questions about Funtastic or would like a place at Funtastic club for after half term please contact the school office. Best wishes to Archana and her committee ,current Funtastic manager, who are stepping down from their role. They have served the school community well for a number of years and we wish them all the very best for the future.

Amazing Autumn!

4th October 2024Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope everyone is keeping well and has started to adjust to the cooler, wet weather we have been experiencing.

It has been a very busy fortnight in school and I have thoroughly enjoyed looking through the books of the children to see how they well they have started the academic year. The children are responding well to the high expectations of the teachers and I have seen some amazing, well presented books with strong adaptations made to support children with special educational needs. It is always great to see the progress all children are making, but particularly our children who require support that is different from and additional to others.  The children are learning a wide range of skills across the curriculum and most children are excellent examples of our school value of pride – taking the utmost care with their learning.

You will be able to see some amazing samples of learning and our school environment on our social media pages. Please take the opportunity to follow what is happening in the classrooms via Twitter/X, Instagram and Facebook. Our first year group blogs will be available for parents on Friday 18th October.

Over the last few weeks different staff have attended training linked to our involvement with the Mastering Number programme being led by the Enigma Maths Hub. I am very much looking forward to seeing the programme in action when visiting classrooms on Thursday 10th October. It is our aim to ensure all children have the skills to be fluent mathematicians and this programme has a successful track record in many other schools across the country.

This month the children will also continue their learning about amazing people from a diverse range of backgrounds. They will have the opportunity to do some paired learning between different classes to celebrate and understand the influence and historical significance of different role models from a range of ethnic backgrounds. This is part of our work to celebrate Black History Month.

Thank you to the parents and carers who attended our phonics workshop, we look forward to welcoming you into school to see a phonics lesson in action at some point very soon. Thank you to Mr Clarke for all his hard work to ensure that we continue to build on and improve phonics provision at Wigmore.

On Thursday 7th November at 9:30 am we are having our first Parent/Carer Information Session for parents and carers of children with special educational needs. These will be taking place once per term and we are looking forward to welcoming our first guest speaker from the Speech, Language and Communication service. A representative from EPIC will be joining us in January, we are just waiting for confirmation of a date. Parents and carers will be able to network informally with one another at the end of the information sessions. Thank you to Mrs Clark, Mrs Eversden and Mrs Jackson who have been extremely busy organising these opportunities to support our families.

Over the last few weeks we have had a number of high schools visiting our Year 6 pupils. For parents and carers of children in Year 6 please make sure you attend all the local opening evenings to make the most informed decision for the next phase of your child’s education. Thank you to the Year 6 staff and staff at the high schools for organising and accommodating these visits.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents and carers who make a concerted effort every day to use the Asda Car Park at school drop off and collection time. It is great that an overwhelming majority of families value the safety and well-being of all members of our school community. Unfortunately, we still have a number of parents and carers who continue to ignore parking restrictions outside our school gates. This creates unnecessary danger for others. I have also been informed of traffic grid lock on Twyford Drive with cars mounting footpaths to pass one another. As a result, I have contacted the local authority parking team to come out to school with traffic wardens and the camera car to fine parents who continue to ignore our requests.

Off to a strong start!

20th September 2024Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

The first 13 days of the academic year have flown past. The children have settled well into the routines in place in their new classes, and their behaviour for learning has been excellent. It is always important to start the year on a positive note, but it is also very important to keep building on a strong start.

In the first 2 weeks of term the children have been learning about the value of resilience (courage to continue). Senior leaders have been dropping in on lessons to see learning in action. Children have talked openly about their learning and the important success criteria for being resilient:

  • Never giving up, keep on trying.
  • Encouraging yourself.
  • Working hard and keep practicing until you understand it.
  • Believing in yourself.
  • Making mistakes, they are proof that you are trying.

Whilst visiting classrooms we have also been looking at the learning environment to make sure it is reflective of the high expectations we are striving to achieve. Thank you to the teachers who have helped create an amazing space for the children to learn in. It is important that all members of our school community make an effort to look after the learning environment. Respect  – for each other, the equipment and the environment – is an important life skill and helps develop a sense of pride.

Thank you to the parents and carers who were able to attend our Welcome Meetings. We hope these meetings, and the slides we have shared, have provided you with an insight into what the children will be doing in school this academic year.

As mentioned in the Welcome Meetings, please follow our various social media pages: Twitter/X – @wigmoreprimary @WigmorePe, Facebook – Wigmore Primary School, Instagram – @schoolwigmoreprimary. Our first class blogs for this academic year will be with you on 18th October.

Remember to keep Friday 27th June free for our International Fair (we will be looking for volunteers to support the school with representing their respective cultures).

Thank you to our parents and carers who are supporting us with Asda Cashpot for Schools. We are up to £560 raised, with another 71 days to go. That is an awesome amount in such a short space of time. In time, your children will benefit from this money and we will let you know what we have spent the money on.

Proud to be Wigmore!

12th July 2024Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope everyone is keeping well and is looking forward to the end of the academic year. This will be my final blog for this academic year so I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our parents and carers for their support this academic year.

It has been a very busy July in school with some amazing learning opportunities for the young people at Wigmore. These opportunities do not come about by chance, they can only become a reality due to the hard work of the staff at Wigmore and the willingness of the children to engage so well in their learning.

Last week the children in Key Stage 2 were treated to a performance by Ricky Recycle to learn all about the importance of recycling. The Hypnocat Gameshow was a fiercely contested battle between two teams which was great fun for all involved. Thanks to Ricky and the staff who organised this.

Our individual track and field athletes also took part in the Luton Schools Athletics Finals. All children performed admirably and represented the school very well against some very strong athletes from other schools. Well done to all involved.

We have had several opportunities to celebrate the achievements of our young musicians at Wigmore as well with the following events taking place in school:

  • Rock Steady Concert
  • Participation in the Luton Schools Singing Spectacular
  • Year 5 Guitar Concert
  • Cultural Diversity Day with songs and dancing on the field

Well done to the children in Year 3 Aspen class for sharing their learning in their assembly which has also taken place. Thank you to the parents and carers who were able to attend this.

This week the teachers have been meeting with parents and carers of our young people at Wigmore who have individual learning plans in place. We hope the parents and carers who attended these meetings found the reviews useful.

Over the last two weeks a number of classes have had trips and visits to support the learning that they are completing in the classrooms. Thank you to the staff who have organised the following opportunities:

  • Year 1 trip to Ruislip Lido
  • Year 2 trip to Stockwood Park
  • Year 6 2 night residential to PGL in Wiltshire

Last week children from across the school had the opportunity to spend some time with their teacher for next academic year. It was great to see the children completing some amazing transition activities and I am confident that the teaching team for next academic year will support the children well with their learning.

Next week in school we will be saying farewell to our current Year 6 cohort. They have been such an amazing group of young people full of positive role models for all other children at Wigmore. We look forward to welcoming Year 6 parents and carers into school for their leaving assembly and hope they enjoy their last week with us.

At the end of the academic year we will also be saying farewell to Mrs Prowse, Mr Pateman and Mr Vetesse. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their contribution to the Wigmore school community and wish them all the very best for the next part of their careers.

Being proud is not about being perfect, it is about your awareness of your growth and potential.

28th June 2024Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been great to see so many parents and carers in school for recent events.

Our Sports Days were a real success and we had the benefit of the fantastic weather. Well done to the winning house (Stockwood – Green) and to all the children, staff and parents who took part in every event. Thank you to the amazing Mr Marshall and Mr Whadcoat who really do know how to organise amazing opportunities for the young people at Wigmore.

This week in school we have also been celebrating Science week with different class workshops. Speaking to the children about the workshops has shown they have really enjoyed the opportunity to learn together with their parents and carers and do something practical and fun. Thanks to Mrs Zoughi for organising this.

Last week I was invited by Year 6 children and staff to attend their Dragons Den workshop which has provided the springboard into their persuasive writing unit. The children were amazing in persuading the dragons (myself and Miss Islam) to invest imaginary money into the inventions they devised. It was amazing to see the Year 6 children converse with such confidence. Well done to all involved.

It has also been a very busy time in the sporting arena with children competing in a range of different activities and well done to all involved in competing and organising these events:

  • Year 5 and 6 finished in 4th place in the county for the Quad Kids Athletics finals
  • The Year 3 and 4 footballers took part in a local tournament – unbeaten in all games with some quality fast paced football on display.
  • The Year 5 and 6 TAG Rugby team took part in a tournament at Franklins Gardens, home of premiership winning Northampton Saints. Details are below:

https://www.lutontoday.co.uk/education/wigmore-primary-students-compete-in-tag-rugby-at-northampton-saints-schools-cup-4675122

Year 1 Ash and Foundation Acorns have also shared their learning with parents and carers during our Tuesday afternoon assembly slot. Well done!

Thank you to our school governors who were in school visiting classrooms and working with senior leaders for the day last Thursday. They commented positively on the children’s attitude towards learning and witnessed some good learning opportunities taking place in a range of curriculum areas as they visited different parts of the school.

This morning we had our second parental advisory group meeting for children with special educational needs. This was an opportunity to share with them the work we have been doing this academic year as a school on improving our whole school approach to working with children with special needs. Every adult at Wigmore, every leader at Wigmore is a teacher of these children. I thank them for their contributions to our discussions.

Well done to the Year 4 children and staff for taking part in an amazing camp out on the school field this week. The overnight stay, organised by Mr Marshall, Mr Whadcoat and the staff at Adventures Into really demonstrated how everyone goes the extra mile for all the young people at Wigmore. The children had an amazing time and will have memories that will last a life time. Thank you to all involved.

Be the best version of you!

14th June 2024Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope everyone is keeping well and has had the chance to enjoy the limited sunshine we have had this week. Many thanks for understanding our reasoning behind postponing our Sports Days this week and we hope we can have some decent weather for our reserve days next week.

Last week in our Friday afternoon assembly we introduced our value for this half term – Pride. This is all about being the best version of you and in order to do that you have to do your very best at anything you do in life. We shared with children different stories of the journeys of contestants in the final of Britain’s Got Talent and the sense of pride their families and friends would have had of these individuals and their achievements in their journey. The children are excellent at listening and contributing to assemblies, their behaviour is exemplary and they are a credit to the school.

This week in school the children in Year 1 have been busy taking part in the phonics screening. I know so many parents, carers and teachers have contributed to ensuring the children have managed this assessment well and we will communicate the results of the screening in their end of academic year reports once we have fully analysed results. We are very pleased with the progress the children have made and I would like to thank all parents for their support with any extra work they have been doing at home and with reading with their child daily. It all makes a huge difference. Well done to the children!

The children in Year 4 have also taken part in the multiplication tables check and we will be working on looking at these results next week. Well done to all who have been involved in preparing the children so well and to the children who approached this assessment with positive energy and enthusiasm.

Over the last few weeks we have had sharing assemblies from Year 2 Rowan and Year 6 Holly. Well done to the children and teachers and thanks to all parents and carers who were able to attend.

Year 2 have also had a recent visit from the fire brigade to learn about different elements of fire safety. The children thoroughly enjoyed this, thanks to the teachers who organised this opportunity for Year 2.

It has been a busy time in the sporting arena for the young people at Wigmore with Quadkids athletics, SEND Sports Festival and winning the District Sports against some high quality athletes from other schools.  Next week the TAG Rugby team is taking part in the south of England finals at Franklins Gardens, home of the premiership champions – Northampton Saints. The standard of PE at Wigmore is amazing and the children rise to a challenge. Thanks to Mr Whadcoat and Mr Marshall for everything they do. Well done to our young athletes and thanks to the parents for their on-going support.

Rise to the challenge!

17th May 2024Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope everyone is keeping well.

Well done to our Year 6 children who have negotiated the end of Key Stage 2 SATS this week. Their determination and commitment to doing their best saw them rise to the challenge this week. Thank you to all the staff who have supported them so well throughout the week and in the lead up to these assessments.

Last week in school our Art subject leader (Miss Bloomfield), two senior leaders (Miss Islam and Mr Clarke) and one of our school governors (Mrs Dove) completed a deep dive into the Art curriculum at Wigmore. It was great to listen to their feedback on the learning that is taking place in this area of the curriculum. Thank you to the adults involved and to the children who were able to talk about the skills they have been learning in school.

School photos have been taken at Wigmore today. These photos will be available to parents and carers soon. Thank you to those involved who have organised the logistics of taking so many photos of children in one day.

Well done and thank you to the children in Year 5 Hawthorn for leading a fantastic sharing assembly this week. Thank you to the parents and carers who were able to attend.

A huge thank you to the staff and children who were provided parents and carers of children with SEND an insight into the work they are doing with sensory circuits. I know the children are benefiting enormously from the hard work of Mr Marshall, Mr Whadcoat and all of our fantastic teaching assistants.

Well done to the children in Year 1, 2, 3 and 4 who have represented the school in recent Quadkids Athletics events over the last two weeks. Some of our Year 1 and 2 children also took part in a football tournament. On Sunday a group of children attended a London Lions basketball match at the Copperbox Arena in Stratford. The children always represent our school so well. Huge thanks to Mr Marshall and Mr Whadcoat who give up so much of their time to ensure the children have access to such amazing learning experiences.

Over the last few weeks it has been pleasing to note our attendance and punctuality rates have improved. Please keep up the good work with ensuring your child is on time and in school daily.

ATTEND TO ACHIEVE!

At Wigmore we have to aim to be here every day! Excellent attendance is 97% or above. There are strong links between good attendance and good progress in school, both academically and socially.  We want to be the best we can possibly be and reach our school target of 97%. We have to make a concerted effort in order to improve attendance and punctuality.

Every minute of every lesson counts!

Challenge – better is always possible!

3rd May 2024Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope everyone is keeping well and has been enjoying the recent sunny days after a lot of rain over the past few months.

Over the last 3 weeks we have been focusing on our value for this half term – challenge. This week and last week it has been clear the children are responding positively to the challenges set by staff at Wigmore. Looking through their books and visiting Science lessons across the school last week it has been pleasing to see the children rise to the challenges in and out of the classroom.

Thank you to the parents who were able to attend the important updates about the Year 1 Phonics Screening in June and the Year 6 SATS in May. The children have been working hard in school preparing for these and your willingness to support them at home will result in children achieving their full potential in these assessments. We must remember that this is only one way to assess the progress of the children and there are other ways we measure the small steps of progress children make at Wigmore.

We have had a number of children going on various trips and taking part in sporting events ranging from Foundation class visiting Pizza Express to golf festivals and football matches. The opportunities for all children at Wigmore are wide ranging and diverse.

This afternoon Year 1 welcomed Imam Tahir Khalid and Mr Ali (parent of Isa in Year 6) to our school to support the children with their learning about the Islamic faith. It is very important for the children to learn all about different faiths. This helps promote the British value of tolerance. It is also an excellent opportunity to celebrate the wonderful diverse community Wigmore is. Thank you to the adults who organised this opportunity.

This morning in school we had our first parental advisory group meeting for SEND. Thank you to the parents and carers for offering their thoughts and suggestions. We have one more meeting towards the end of the Summer term.

Well done to Year 4 Maple Class for leading a fantastic class assembly this week and to all the parents and carers who were able to attend this.
