Running into half term!

22nd May 2026Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we reach the end of what has been an incredibly action-packed half term, I want to take a moment to reflect on everything our wonderful school community has achieved. With fantastic weather forecast for the entire half-term holiday, it feels like the perfect time to step back, appreciate the sunshine, and be truly grateful for all the brilliant things happening at our school.

Here is a look back at a very busy few weeks:

Celebrating Our Year 6 Pupils

A massive well done to all of our Year 6 pupils who worked incredibly hard throughout SATS week. They gave their absolute best across all four days, and we could not be prouder of their attitude. Since then, they haven’t slowed down! They have been very busy in class focusing on their writing skills as they begin to prepare for their upcoming transition to high school.

A huge thank you to the staff, parents, and carers who have supported them so brilliantly, and once again, well done to the children.

Fun Runs, Marathons and Playground Fundraising

Today, the school was full of colour and energy for our Fancy Dress Fun Run! Events like this really capture the children’s imaginations and show them just how enjoyable physical activity can be.

Your incredible kindness and generosity have shone through once again, helping us raise over £5,500 so far for improvements to our playground. Combined with several kind donations we have secured from local businesses, our £12,000 target is fast becoming a reality. These improvements are going to benefit the children enormously.

On the subject of physical challenges, the adults taking part in the upcoming ultra-marathon distance walk from Wembley to Wigmore have been training tirelessly. Last Sunday, I actually crossed paths with them out in Hertfordshire (I felt slightly awkward as I was driving) as they completed a gruelling 31 km trek back to Wigmore! Their hard work and determination to push themselves sets an amazing example for our pupils.

  • Special thanks to Mr Marshall and Mr Whadcoat for all their hard work coordinating this.
  • Thank you to the many parents and staff working behind the scenes to make this challenge a special memory for everyone involved (even if their legs hurt for a few days afterwards!).

Community Spirit: Coffee Mornings & Charity Sales

Thank you to everyone who attended our Coffee Morning in the hall on Tuesday. Mr Greenacre really does an amazing job making sure everyone feels welcome at our school on a daily basis. Miss Wynter was also on hand to help, organising an excellent selection of second-hand uniform for our families. It would be great to see even more faces at our next one!

We have also seen fantastic leadership from our pupils this week. Yesterday and today, some of our Year 4, 5, and 6 pupils from The Orchard, Hawthorn, and Oak classes organized a charity sale, selling items they had lovingly made in their own time. It was incredibly well-supported and raised a brilliant amount for their nominated charities. Well done, team!

Inspiring Learning and Sporting Success

  • Year 3 Egyptian Day: On Wednesday, Year 3 immersed themselves in an amazing day of learning about the Ancient Egyptian civilisation. Thank you to the teachers for organizing such an engaging day, and to the wonderful parents and carers who volunteered their time to help out.
  • Sports Success: Well done to all the pupils who took part in the Quad Kids sports events and the cross-country relays over the last fortnight. Your determination and willingness to take on these tough physical challenges beautifully embodied our core school values of challenge and resilience.

Sunshine, Culture and Community

7th May 2026Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been a truly vibrant week here at school! The sun has been shining down on us, and the sheer range of activities on offer, both inside and outside the classroom, has created a tangible buzz for learning across all year groups.

Seeds of Success: Our Sunflower Sale

A huge thank you to everyone who supported our Sunflower Plant Sale after school on Thursday. Our green-fingered organisers have been incredibly busy in the great outdoors, and their hard work paid off.

The funds raised are going toward vital gardening equipment and a brand-new Science magazine subscription for the children. It’s wonderful to see our school environment and our curriculum benefiting from such a lovely community event.

Celebrating African Culture Day

Wednesday was a standout highlight as we celebrated African Culture Day. The school was a sea of bright colours, and it was heartening to see so many children wearing traditional cultural clothing with such a visible sense of pride and belonging.

Why we do this:

  • Dance Workshops: Children engaged in high-energy, amazing workshops that brought rhythm and movement to the halls.
  • Focused Learning: Classroom activities explored the deep and wonderful contributions African culture makes to our daily lives in Britain.
  • British Values: These events are essential in promoting respect and tolerance for all cultures, ensuring our school remains an inclusive and welcoming space for everyone.

Focus on Inclusion

Over the last fortnight, we have hosted several school improvement visits specifically focused on inclusion. These visits allow us to analyse and refine the work we do to ensure every child feels supported.

A special “thank you” goes to the children who welcomed our visitors so warmly, and to the staff involved in planning how we can make our school even better in this crucial area.

Supporting our Year 6 Pupils

Next week is a very important milestone for our Year 6 children as they sit their end of Key Stage 2 assessments (SATs).

The children have worked incredibly hard, and they should be immensely proud of their efforts. We would also like to extend our gratitude to:

  • The Teachers: For guiding these pupils through their primary journey.
  • Parents & Carers: For the late pick-ups, early drop-offs for booster clubs, and the endless support at home.

We wish all of Year 6 the very best of luck—you’ve got this!

Fundraising Update: Wembley to Wigmore

Our big fundraiser is going from strength to strength! Whether you are taking part in the Wembley to Wigmore challenge for adults or supporting the themed events for the children, your generosity is making a difference.

We are working hard to transform our outdoor space into the best playground in Luton and beyond. Thank you for your continued support in making this vision a reality.

A Spring of Challenge and Celebration

24th April 2026Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been a truly wonderful start to the Summer Term. The arrival of the fantastic spring weather has brought a renewed energy to the playground, and it has been a pleasure to see our school community thriving in the sunshine over the last two weeks.

Exploring Our Local Community

I have been delighted to hear that so many of our children have already visited the new Wigmore Valley Park. Our school was honored to take part in the official opening ceremony recently. If you haven’t had the chance to visit yet, I highly recommend heading there after school or over the weekend; it is a brilliant local asset for our families to enjoy.

The Value of Challenge: Wembley to Wigmore

This half-term, we officially launched our new school value: Challenge. This ties in perfectly with our ambitious school fundraiser.

Our goal is to raise £12,000 to make much-needed improvements to our school playground. While this is a big target, we have started incredibly strong! By working together, we can make this dream a reality for our children.

  • Training Begins: This weekend, our group of parents, staff, and governors will head out for their first official training walk. We are getting the “miles in the legs” ahead of our Wembley to Wigmore mega-challenge on June 13th.
  • Inspiration from the Pros: Mr. Marshall and Mr. Whadcoat recently took a group of children to Wembley for the England vs. Spain match. The children were fascinated to learn that adults will be walking that very distance back to school to support their play spaces!

Attendance and Punctuality

A huge thank you to the families who consistently park respectfully around the school, utilise the Asda car park, and arrive promptly when our doors open at 8:45 am.

While we have recently adjusted our register closing times to align with other local schools, we are still looking for an overall improvement in punctuality.

Our goal is simple: Strive to arrive at 8:45 am!

The impact of our recent “Do Something Different Day” was excellent, and it was a joy to see the children so engaged in unique activities. Let’s keep that momentum going!

Celebrating Progress and Supporting Writing

It was wonderful to see so many of you in school last week for our Parents’ Evenings. I also appreciated the opportunity to meet with a group of parents in the hall to discuss the recent parent survey results and our next steps.

This week, I have been reviewing children’s writing across the school. The progress and effort are clear to see! To help maintain this momentum, here are a few ways you can support writing at home:

  • Keep it Purposeful: Encourage children to write shopping lists, thank-you notes, or cards for birthdays.
  • Journaling: Buy a special notebook for your child to record their weekend adventures or “Spring observations.”
  • The “Slow Writing” Challenge: Ask your child to write just three sentences about a picture, but challenge them to use one “ambitious” adjective in each.
  • Read to Write: Discussing the books you read together helps children understand story structure and vocabulary, which naturally flows into their own writing.

School News and Transitions

  • Reception Places: Last week, families received their Reception allocations. If you know of any families new to the area still seeking a school place, please do encourage them to get in touch with our office.
  • Year 4 Adventures: A huge “well done” to Year 4, who had a fantastic (and very chocolatey!) trip to Cadbury World this week.
  • Year 6 Dedication: Our Year 6 pupils are working incredibly hard in the lead-up to their SATs. Their focus and productivity during these first two weeks of term have been exemplary.
  • In our assembly today, we spent time learning about St George’s Day. It was a wonderful opportunity to discuss the history and legends associated with the patron saint of England, focusing on the themes of bravery and chivalry.
  • A special thank you to all the children who came to school today wearing their Scouting and Guiding uniforms. It was fantastic to see you representing these organisations with such pride, and it served as a great reminder of the many ways our pupils and staff contribute to our wider community and take on personal challenges outside of the classroom.

Spring Term Reflections

20th March 2026Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we reach the final days of the Spring term, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on what has been an incredibly busy and productive few weeks at school. This will be my final blog post before the holidays, and it is wonderful to end on such a high note.

Seasonal Celebrations

First and foremost, I would like to send our warmest wishes to all our families celebrating Eid al-Fitr today. Eid Mubarak to you all! We also wish a very Happy Easter to those in our community who will be celebrating over the holiday period. Whatever your plans, I hope it is a time of joy and togetherness.

The Final Countdown: “Do Something Different Day”

You may have noticed a particular buzz around the corridors this week! Our Attendance Team noted a slight dip in attendance during the final two weeks of previous terms. To ensure every child is in school and engaged right until the final bell, our teaching team has been busy planning “Do Something Different Day,” which takes place on the very last day of term.

The children will have the opportunity to choose from a fantastic range of unique activities, turning these final days into a countdown of excitement and purposeful learning.

Enrichment and Excellence

It has been a fortnight full of adventure and academic rigor:

  • Year 6 at Whipsnade Zoo: Our oldest pupils headed to the zoo to bring their Science curriculum to life. Seeing the animals up close provided a brilliant context for their studies on classification and adaptation.
  • Year 5 at Stockwood Park: All Year 5 classes have spent time at Stockwood Park recently, continuing our valuable collaborative work with Wenlock School as part of the Linking Network between schools in Luton.
  • History Focus: Miss. Gilbert (our History Lead) and the Senior Leadership Team spent a focused afternoon reviewing History across the school. It was a pleasure to see the progress our pupils are making and the depth of historical inquiry taking place in every year group.
  • Healthy Habits: Last week, we welcomed visitors from the NHS to discuss our approach to healthy eating and physical activity. We had a fantastic brainstorming session on how we can make our school environment even healthier for our children.

Sporting Success

Our pupils have been incredibly active lately! We’ve seen participation in football matches, rugby festivals, archery, and the Sportsability festival at Inspire. A special mention must go to the lucky group who had the opportunity to walk on the hallowed turf at Twickenham this week, a memory I’m sure they will treasure forever.

Showcasing Our Learning

Well done to the pupils in Holly and Willow classes for their wonderful assemblies in the small hall. It is always a proud moment to see the children showcase their hard work to an audience.

Finally, our Science Focus Day was truly exceptional. The effort put into the home projects was staggering, and I was blown away by how confidently the children articulated their scientific findings to their peers. Thank you to all the parents and carers who supported these projects at home.

Looking Ahead

I hope that every one of our families has a restful, safe, and happy break. We look forward to welcoming all pupils back to school on Monday 13th April at 8:45 am.

Spring Sunshine and Celebration

6th March 2026Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

The Spring term continues to fly by at an incredible pace! It has been wonderful to see the school bathed in sunshine this week; the apricity, that unique warmth of the sun on a chilly day, has felt truly amazing and has certainly put a spring in everyone’s step.

A World of Reading

We have just wrapped up a spectacular World Book Day. It was a true celebration of reading across the entire school. From the “fantastic” costumes to the high-energy activities in every classroom, the building was buzzing with literary excitement.

The highlights included:

  • Author Visit: A huge thank you to our guest author for inspiring our budding writers.
  • Book Fair: It was wonderful to see so many children choosing new stories to take home.
  • Special Menu: Our kitchen team outdid themselves with a themed dinner menu that was “fun for all.”

Science and Song

Our curriculum has been brought to life recently with some very special guests. Last week, we welcomed an array of birds of prey to the school. This visit provided a brilliant link to the children’s Science work, allowing them to see these majestic creatures up close.

In the hall, we’ve been treated to some exceptional talent:

  • Class Assemblies: A massive well done to Conkers and Elm classes for their informative and entertaining assemblies.
  • Guitar Club: Our young guitarists gave an exceptional performance that hit all the right notes!
  • Musician of the Month: All our musical efforts this month have been inspired by the legendary Freddie Mercury and Queen. It’s been great hearing the children engage with such iconic music.

Sports, Skills, and Support

Our pupils have been busy representing the school in various football tournaments, showing great sportsmanship and teamwork on the pitch. Meanwhile, some children who have been involved in Bikeability have been honing their cycling safety skills.

A huge thank you to everyone who has signed up for the Wembley to Wigmore fundraising walk. Your support for our school projects is greatly appreciated.

Looking Ahead: Attendance and Growth

As the weather improves, we are continuing our drive to improve attendance and punctuality. Every day in school counts, and we want to ensure all our pupils are here to benefit from the rich learning opportunities we provide as we head toward the end of the term.

The final day of term is fast approaching, and we are going to be counting down to our “Do Something Different Day.” It promises to be an event the children will not want to miss!

Finally, our school tours have been incredibly busy lately. As our pupil numbers continue to increase, we are proud to be a growing community. If you know of any families moving into the local area who are looking for a school place, please do put them in touch with us.

Choirs, Creatures, and Creative Minds

12th February 2026Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we reach the midpoint of the spring term, it’s wonderful to look back at the whirlwind of activity that has filled our classrooms (and beyond!) over the last few weeks. Despite the chilly weather, our school community has been glowing with energy and achievement.

Here is a look at what we’ve been up to:

🎶 Singing Their Hearts Out

Our school choir recently took to the big stage at Wembley for Young Voices. It was an unforgettable experience; seeing our students perform with thousands of others in such an iconic venue was a true highlight. Their dedication to rehearsals certainly paid off in harmony!

🦁 Winter Explorers

Year 4 proved they are made of tough stuff during their trip to Whipsnade Zoo. Even with the winter weather nipping at their noses, the children had a fantastic time learning about conservation and seeing the animals in their winter habitats.

🌟 Confidence in the Spotlight

We’ve had some brilliant showcases of learning recently:

  • Year 3 Juniper Class and Year 1 Ash Class both hosted wonderful assemblies in the Small Hall.
  • It was a joy to see the children sharing their hard work with such confidence and pride. Thank you to all the parents and carers who came along to support them.

🧠 Prioritizing Wellbeing

Mental health remains at the heart of what we do. Years 3 and 5 celebrated with a high-energy Glow Party, while other year groups engaged in various mindfulness and reflection activities. These sessions are vital for helping our children build resilience and maintain a positive mindset.

🏥 Health and Collaboration

  • Reception Class have been superstars while completing their hearing tests this week—a small but important step in ensuring every child has what they need to succeed.
  • Behind the scenes, we hosted two very productive meetings with our Teaching Assistants and SENDCos from across the Eastern Area Partnership. Collaborating with our peers ensures we are always providing the best possible support for all our learners.

Looking Ahead

When we return, we have plenty to get excited about! We are looking forward to:

  • Mother Languages Day: Celebrating the rich diversity of our school community.
  • Design Technology: A range of hands-on projects are planned to get those engineering brains whirring.

A Well-Earned Rest

Finally, we want to wish you all a restful half term break. We hope you get some time to recharge, and we’ll be crossing our fingers that the weather begins to improve as we head into the second half of the spring term!

The Gold Book

Well done to the following children who were in the Gold Book this week.

Music, Sports, and Virtual Adventures!

30th January 2026Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

It is hard to believe that January has already flown by and February is almost upon us. If you listen carefully, birdsong can be heard early in the morning, the afternoons are finally getting lighter, and—fingers crossed—we can hope to start seeing some less wet weather soon!

School continues to be a very busy place, full of amazing learning opportunities. Over the past fortnight, the classrooms and halls have been buzzing with activity. Here is a snapshot of what the children have been up to.

Bringing Learning to Life

We love finding ways to make the curriculum leap off the page, and the last two weeks have been no exception.

  • Virtual Reality: Years 3 and 4 were treated to an incredible Virtual Reality experience. Without leaving the classroom, they were transported back in time to Ancient Egypt and deep into the Amazon rainforest. It was a fantastic way to immerse them in their topics.
  • Conkers Class at Pizza Express: Conkers class donned their chef hats for a tasty trip to Pizza Express, learning about food preparation (and hopefully enjoying the results!).
  • Healthy Smiles: Our Reception children received a very important visit for a Dental Talk, helping to build good habits for healthy teeth from a young age.
  • World Religion Day: Today we celebrated this in our school. Thank you to the staff who created some amazing opportunities to promote tolerance and understanding of the different faiths we have in our school.

A Celebration of Talents

The school has been filled with music and smiles recently. The Rock Steady music performance was a massive hit, showcasing the children’s confidence and musical abilities. It is always wonderful to see them performing live for an audience.

We also had our School Photos taken. Thank you to everyone for sending the children in looking so smart; we hope you like the final prints.

Sporting Success

It has been an exceptionally active fortnight for our sports teams. We are incredibly proud of the resilience and teamwork displayed by all our athletes:

  • Key Stage 1 and Year 5 both took part in Multisports events, showing great energy and enthusiasm.
  • A special mention goes to our Girls’ and Boys’ football teams, who took part in the County Finals! This is a huge achievement, and they represented the school brilliantly.

Behind the Scenes

While the children have been busy learning, we have also welcomed our Governors into school. They have been conducting visits focused on our English curriculum, Phonics, and Maths. These visits are a vital part of ensuring we continue to offer the best possible education to your children.

Happy New Year!

16th January 2026Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope everyone is well.

I understand that we are already in mid January but I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all our families back to school in 2026, particularly those families who have started at Wigmore this term.

Over the last few months parents and carers have finalised their decisions about what school they would like to choose if they have a child starting in September this year. Thank you to the families who have looked around Wigmore over the last few months and thank you to the children and staff who have welcomed these visitors to our school to see learning in action.

Thank you to the parents and carers who took time out to complete our school survey. This survey will close early next week and senior staff will commence analysing the results, communicating these with our school governors and writing to parents and carers on our intentions in response to your views. Your views are important to us on our continual journey of improvement.

This week we had our termly phonics (Read Write Inc) development day. This was an excellent opportunity to see phonics learning in action and focus on the progress so many pupils are making in reading. Thank you to the parents and carers who are working incredibly hard at home to ensure they listen to their child read daily and to the teachers who are doing a great job teaching the skills of early reading. Mr Clarke works incredibly hard assessing the pupils regularly and monitoring the progress of children and this is also making a big difference.

Over the last two weeks our Year 3 pupils had the opportunity to attend the panto in Milton Keynes. The children talked positively about this opportunity and had a great afternoon out. Some of our Year 3 pupils also took part in a sports festival at Inspire and when the children take part in this type of activity they represent the school so well. Thank you to all involved who organised these opportunities.

This week we also welcomed one of our school governors, Sarah Smart, into school to spend some time looking at all the things we are doing to support children with special needs, including some time in The Orchard. Thank you to all our governors who provide the support and challenge that we need in order to continue to improve.

This week Luton Town Football Club community team have been in school working with some of our pupils to promote the EFL Smile Campaign. The Scan to Smile campaign will run from Friday 23rd to Saturday 31st January 2026. Scan to Smile is one of the key campaigns during this season. During matchdays, fans will be encouraged to scan QR codes displayed around the stadium to view short, uplifting stories from their local community – designed to lift spirits during the January blues and strengthen the connection between Clubs and supporters. Thank you to all involved in this.

Thank you to our families who are choosing active travel options to and from school and to those who consistently park in places which carefully consider the safety of our children and our local residents. Unfortunately, we still do have a minority of families who ignore our requests and we are in regular communication with Luton Borough Council Traffic Enforcement team who have been out to school this week and will be continuing with regular visits to our school.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all members of our school community

12th December 2025Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope everyone is keeping well in the lead up to the Christmas holidays.

Thank you to the parents, carers and children who have been able to join us in school for the following events:

  • Christmas Crafts
  • Christmas Disco
  • Christmas Dinner and fundraising day for Save the Children

Next week we also have some more festive fun events for families with the Key Stage 1 Christmas Carols, Year 3 Percussion Performance and Early Years Jingle and Mingle event.

Huge credit to the staff who have organised the above events for the children to enjoy with their friends and families.

Last week Year 5 also had a fantastic educational visit to the National Space Centre in Leicester. The children and staff had a fantastic day out to consolidate key concepts they have learnt in the science unit on space. Thank you to the adults who organised the trip and well done to the children for representing our school so well on the day.

Well done to Year 3 Aspen class for leading a fantastic sharing assembly this week. Thank you to the adults who organised this and to the parents and carers who were able to attend.

Next week in school we will be saying farewell to Miss Godfrey and Mrs Bashir. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their commitment to the children and families at Wigmore throughout their time with us. We wish them all the best in their new roles.

A few reminders for parents and carers please take a few minutes to complete our survey, your feedback is important to us in order to continue on our improvement journey.

Independent learners

28th November 2025Damien Johnston

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope everyone is well.

Thank you to our children, parents and carers who have provided a warm Wigmore welcome to Mr Greenacre, our new safeguarding lead, who started with us this week.

Over the last two weeks it has been great to visit all classrooms across the school to see our independent learners in action. This week we had a maths curriculum focus day and it was pleasing to see the children actively engaged in practical maths activities, the children responding very well in all lessons. Children are also recording their learning with great care and pride in their books.

On Monday I spent the afternoon introducing Mr Greenacre to all our different classes. It was great that the children could name safe adults that they can speak to at school and at home if they have any worries or concerns. All the children understand the importance of talking to trusted adults about anything that is on their mind.

This week our Year 2 children visited The Tower of London to support their learning about the monarchy in History. The children had a fantastic day out. Thank you to all parents and carers who waited patiently for their late arrival back to school. The London traffic on the return journey to school was not very helpful. Thank you to the adults who organised this trip for the children.

Our Reception children also ventured out this week to Pizza Express for a fun filled morning of pizza making. We hope the children and their families enjoyed their pizza creations. Thank you to our organisers.

Last week the children in Year 4 took part in a day of learning about life during the roman times. The children fully immersed themselves into a day of learning which supported and complimented some of the things they have been learning in the classroom. As always the adults leading the day were very impressed with the knowledge of the children and their excellent behaviour for learning. Thank you to our organisers and helpers on the day.

Well done to Alder and Hazel class for leading fantastic sharing assemblies over the last two weeks. Thank you to the parents and carers who were able to attend these events.

On the sporting front it has been another busy two weeks of physical activity for everyone at Wigmore. The school has sent young athletes to the following events:

  • Girls Futsal festival
  • Boys football matches
  • Basketball festival
  • Sportsability festival

Well done to everyone who took part and thank you to our amazing organisers.

Over the next 3 weeks we will get into the festive spirit with the start of our Christmas Craft workshops. We look forward to welcoming parents and carers into school for these.
